70% of Teens Use AI for Schoolwork, But Schools Aren't Teaching AI Literacy
A major gap is widening between how much students are already using artificial intelligence and how much formal guidance they're receiving at school. Common Sense Media has completed its K-12 Digital Literacy and Well-Being Curriculum, adding a new high school program as new research finds that 70% of U.S. teens are using AI for schoolwork, yet fewer than three in ten have ever discussed what AI is or how it works in a classroom setting.
Why Are Students Using AI, and How Are They Actually Using It?
The picture of teen AI use is more nuanced than a simple "using it to cheat" narrative. Among the 70% of teens who use AI for schoolwork, the majority are not just copying answers. Instead, 77% said they use AI for help without getting direct answers, including brainstorming ideas, checking their own completed work, and requesting feedback on assignments they've already written.
When teens do get an AI-generated answer, they're often refining it. Thirty-five percent said they get an answer and then improve it using what they already know, while 31% rewrite an AI answer to sound like them. Only 25% said they use the answer as-is. Interestingly, when students get stuck on a problem, AI is not usually their first move. Just 10% turn first to an AI tool, compared with 26% who ask a teacher or parent and 25% who try to solve the problem themselves.
Students also reported mixed feelings about how AI affects their learning. Two-thirds of AI users, 66%, said it helps them understand schoolwork rather than simply finish it faster. However, 39% said they feel they are missing out on learning when they use AI to complete assignments, and 38% said having AI available leads them to generate fewer of their own ideas.
What's the Disconnect Between Student Use and School Instruction?
The research reveals a striking gap between adoption and education. Only 27% of all teens surveyed said a teacher had ever discussed what AI is and how it works in class. Thirty percent had discussed safe AI use, while 26% had talked about how to tell whether AI-generated information is accurate or trustworthy. This means that while seven in ten teens are actively using AI, the vast majority have received little to no formal guidance on the topic.
The confusion extends to school policies themselves. Thirty-five percent of teenagers do not understand their school's AI rules or are unsure what they are. Among those who do know the rules, 33% said AI is allowed and they understand the guidelines, 23% said their school bans AI, and 9% said their school does not appear to have any rules at all. Even more telling, 44% of teens already using AI for schoolwork said an AI tool had been blocked or banned on a school network or school-issued device, and 59% of that group simply switched to a personal device to access AI instead.
How to Integrate AI Literacy Into K-12 Education
- Start Early and Build Progressively: Common Sense Media's K-8 curriculum contains between 13 and 18 lessons per grade, each approximately 20 minutes long, progressing from online safety and digital footprints in early grades to AI, algorithms, and misinformation as students get older.

What Skills Do Teens Actually Prioritize for Their Future?
Despite widespread AI use, teens still prioritize human skills when thinking about their futures. Fifty-five percent of teens selected working well with other people among the three skills they expect to matter most as adults, followed by fact-checking and critical thinking at 50% and reading and understanding complex information at 48%. Only 21% selected knowing how to use AI tools effectively.
This finding suggests that while AI is a tool students are already using, they recognize that the ability to think critically, collaborate, and verify information will remain essential. The research also found that students with an Individualized Education Program or 504 plan were more likely to adapt AI to their own learning needs. Among teens with an IEP or 504 plan, 44% had set up or adjusted an AI tool for needs such as note-taking, audio narration, transcription, or translation, compared with 34% of those without one.
What Does the Broader EdTech Market Look Like?
The push for AI literacy comes as the broader educational technology market is expanding rapidly. The global EdTech Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) tools market, which includes cloud-based learning platforms and AI-enabled education tools, is valued at $60.9 billion in 2026 and is projected to reach approximately $217.6 billion by 2035, registering a compound annual growth rate of 15.2%.
North America leads with a 40.8% market share, equivalent to approximately $24.8 billion. K-12 education accounts for 43.5% of sector demand, while businesses represent 67.3% of end-use demand as employers require recurring reskilling in AI, cybersecurity, data, and other rapidly changing fields. Cloud-based platforms hold 72.4% of market deployment, allowing schools and businesses to scale access, update software centrally, and integrate new AI capabilities faster.
Learning Management Systems (LMS) platforms, which provide a central environment for course delivery, assignments, grades, assessments, and communication, lead the software category with a 48.2% market share. However, the market is increasingly moving toward platform consolidation, with buyers wanting learning systems that can integrate AI assistants, virtual classrooms, and third-party content rather than requiring teachers to work across many disconnected interfaces.
The research from Common Sense Media was conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago between April 30 and May 14, 2026, surveying 1,017 teenagers aged 13 to 17 across all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, with an overall margin of error of plus or minus 4.3 percentage points at the 95% confidence level. The curriculum itself is available free to teachers, schools, and districts, with accompanying professional development and implementation guidance.
