Agility Robotics' Digit V5 Ditches the Safety Cage: Why That Changes Everything

Agility Robotics is preparing to launch its Digit V5 humanoid robot in December, designed to work safely and cooperatively with human workers without the safety cages that currently isolate every other warehouse robot. This shift addresses what company executives say is the single biggest barrier to widespread humanoid deployment: the ability to operate in shared human spaces rather than cordoned-off zones.

What's the Real Problem Holding Back Warehouse Robots?

Most people assume that humanoid robots are stuck in warehouses because they're too slow, lack battery life, or can't manipulate objects with enough precision. Daniel Diez, Agility's chief business officer, says that's a fundamental misunderstanding of the actual bottleneck. "It's probably the biggest misconception that what's holding back these robots are skills or AI or batteries," Diez explained. "The truth of the matter is what holds back large-scale deployments of humanoid robots is their inability to work outside of safety parameters or safety cages".

Right now, every humanoid robot working in a warehouse or factory, including earlier versions of Digit, operates behind safety fencing that physically separates it from human workers. This creates a cascading problem: it consumes valuable floor space, disrupts workflow patterns, and makes deals impossible at facilities that simply don't have room for a cordoned-off robot zone. Many potential customers have told Agility to wait for the next generation rather than accept these constraints.

How Will Digit V5 Actually Work Safely Around Humans?

Digit V5 will combine upgraded software and hardware to detect people, understand what it's seeing, and react in ways that keep humans safe. The robot will leverage Digit's proprietary cycloidal actuators in its hips and knees, which provide the strength and dynamic stability needed to react without dropping a payload or falling over. Agility has tested this capability by literally pulling the rug out from under Digit; the robot takes a quick half-step, catches itself, and keeps the payload in the air.

Beyond safety, Digit V5 will offer three major upgrades that expand its practical utility:

  • Cooperative Safety: A massively upgraded software and hardware combination including a new algorithm to detect people using cameras and sensors, the ability to understand what it's seeing, and the physical capability to react in a way that keeps humans safe.
  • Extended Operating Hours: Better battery life and quick charging will enable Digit V5 to work 20-hour days, allowing a single robot to cover a three-shift operation and dramatically improving unit economics for customers.
  • Flexible Manipulation: Digit V5 will have an ISO flange, a standardized connector at the end of its arms, allowing it to use the enormous existing catalog of end effectors built up over decades of robotics. Eventually, the robot will swap tools itself, adding more delicate work like kitting and sorting to its existing bulk material handling capabilities.

The removal of safety cages opens up entirely new verticals where a fenced-off robot would be a non-starter. Retail and pharmaceutical facilities, for example, have workflows and spatial constraints that make cordoned-off automation impractical. "This will open up the ability to work with a great number of customers who we've had to say, wait for the next-generation robot," Diez noted.

Why Speed Isn't the Real Measure of Success

Agility has deliberately chosen bulk material handling, moving things around factories and warehouses, as its initial target market because that's where the labor gap is most acute across the US, Europe, Korea, and Japan. These are the jobs Diez describes as "dull, dirty, dangerous, injury-prone, with high degrees of absenteeism and turnover".

When asked about speed, Diez pointed to a real-world example: at Schaeffler's plant in South Carolina, Digit V4 is already loading greasy machine parts into an industrial washer faster than the washer can ingest them. "It isn't always necessary to be faster than a human," Diez explained. "It's 'can I process more work in the same time period than the alternative?'" The real equation is whether the robot can do the work at a price below the fully burdened cost of a human doing the same job, "if they could even find that person," he added.

  • Labor Gap Assessment: Identify roles with high turnover, absenteeism, or difficulty filling positions. Humanoid robots are most economically viable where human labor is scarce or unreliable.
  • Space and Workflow Constraints: Evaluate whether your facility has room for a cordoned-off robot zone or requires robots that can work alongside human workers without safety barriers.
  • Task Specificity and Tool Flexibility: Assess whether your material handling tasks require frequent tool changes or if they're repetitive enough to justify a single end-effector configuration.
  • Operational Continuity Needs: Consider whether you need a single robot covering multiple shifts or multiple robots for single-shift operations, as this affects the return on investment calculation.

What Does This Mean for Agility's Public Debut?

Agility is going public via a $2.5 billion merger with Churchill Capital Corp XI under the ticker AGLT, making it the first US pure-play humanoid robotics company to report real financials as a public company. The company says it's sitting on roughly $300 million in booked revenue across some 1,000 robots deployed at nine customer sites including Schaeffler, GXO, Toyota, and Mercado Libre.

Diez frames the going-public transition as an opportunity to set a new standard in a field awash with nine- and ten-figure valuations built largely on demo reels. "You don't see us pumping out marketing videos," he said. "This is what a humanoid robotics company looks like that is beginning to deploy commercially and is focused on delivering ROI".

The real test will come when Digit V5 launches in December. If the next version can support and grow that $300 million revenue base while actually delivering on the promise of safe human-robot collaboration, it could validate not just Agility's business model but the entire premise that humanoid robots are ready for mainstream warehouse deployment. If it falls short, it will raise hard questions about whether the industry's timeline and valuations are realistic.
