AI agents are becoming sophisticated enough to negotiate with vendors, compare prices, and arrange deliveries, but they hit a wall when it comes time to pay. Today's payment systems were built for humans to authorize transactions, not for autonomous software to move money at computer speed. A new startup called Natural is tackling this infrastructure gap with $30 million in fresh funding, positioning itself as a direct competitor to payment giant Stripe.

Why Can't AI Agents Pay for Things Right Now?

The problem sounds simple but reveals a fundamental mismatch between how AI agents operate and how financial systems work. Traditional payment rails, including credit cards and ACH (Automated Clearing House) transfers, require human authorization before money moves. This creates a bottleneck for agents engineered to work autonomously. When an AI agent identifies a vendor, negotiates a price, and arranges a delivery, it still needs a human to approve the payment.

Natural co-founder and CEO Kahlil Lalji realized this gap while preparing to launch his new venture. Lalji previously founded Ivella, a banking product for couples that was acquired by Earnin in 2023. He initially hoped to avoid the finance sector after the challenges of the zero-interest-rate era, but the opportunity proved too compelling. "I kept on coming back to it," Lalji explained. "It just feels obvious that agentic payments are going to be structurally the most important problem in the space".

What Does Natural's Solution Actually Do?

Natural positions itself as an agent orchestration layer, meaning it sits between AI agents and the financial system to enable autonomous transactions. By integrating Natural's infrastructure, companies can allow their agents to make autonomous payments, collect funds, and transact with both humans and other agents.

The startup was founded in 2025 by Lalji alongside Eric Wang, his co-founder at Ivella, and Walt Leung, a former engineering manager at Nextdoor. The company has now raised $40 million in total funding, with Kirsten Green, founder and managing partner at venture capital firm Forerunner, leading the $30 million Series A round. Green's firm typically focuses on consumer experiences and the future of commerce, but she was attracted by Natural's broader ambitions to reinvent payment infrastructure itself, including how disputed transactions are handled.

How Is Natural Approaching the Technical Challenge?

Natural's architecture combines multiple payment methods to serve different use cases. While the startup plans to incorporate stablecoins, which are cryptocurrency tokens designed to maintain a stable value, it is also building support for traditional bank payments. This hybrid approach gives it flexibility as the market for AI agent payments develops.

The startup has attracted senior engineering talent from fintech giants including Stripe, Ramp, and Square, signaling confidence in its technical direction. Although Natural has operated in beta testing until now, Lalji told TechCrunch that the company has made enough critical architectural decisions to give it a "good shot" at competing with incumbents like Stripe, which is also racing to redesign payment rails for AI agents.

The race to build AI agent payment infrastructure reflects a broader shift in how venture capital views AI development. Rather than betting solely on consumer-facing AI applications, investors are increasingly backing infrastructure companies that enable AI agents to operate autonomously in the real world. Natural's funding round demonstrates that venture capitalists see autonomous payments as a critical missing piece in the AI agent ecosystem.

Lalji's bet is that speed will be Natural's competitive advantage. By developing the payment infrastructure faster than established giants, Natural hopes to become the financial backbone for AI agents before larger competitors can adapt their existing systems. The startup's mission has already attracted experienced engineers from the fintech industry, suggesting that talented builders believe in the opportunity.

As AI agents become more capable of executing complex, multi-step tasks autonomously, the ability to move money without human intervention will shift from a nice-to-have feature to a fundamental requirement. Natural's $30 million Series A suggests that investors are betting this transition is already underway.
