The 60 largest U.S. data centers under construction in August alone could produce 101.5 million tons of carbon-dioxide equivalent per year, equivalent to adding 24 million gas-burning cars to the road. Why Is the EPA Loosening Environmental Rules for Data Centers?

The timing is no coincidence: the government and Silicon Valley are racing to build AI data centers on every available piece of land, and these facilities demand enormous amounts of electricity.

What Specific Pollutants Are Data Centers Releasing Into Communities?

  • Fine Particulate Matter: Even Iowa, a renewable energy leader that generated 58.5% of its electricity from wind last year, has increased coal consumption to power the data center boom. Coal's share of the state's electricity mix jumped from 20.5% in 2024 to 26% in 2026, causing emissions of fine particles known as PM2.5 to increase by more than 50% at the state's two biggest electric utilities. These particles sink deep into the lungs, can enter the bloodstream, and cause serious respiratory and cardiovascular damage.
  • PFAS Chemicals: Data centers use PFAS, or "forever" chemicals, in cooling and fire suppression systems, according to a report from the Environmental and Energy Study Institute. These toxins also come from discarded microchips as part of what researchers call a coming "tsunami" of AI-driven electronic waste. PFAS chemicals attack the liver, kidneys, and blood, and cause cancer, birth defects, and other serious health problems.
  • Water Contamination: Data centers are both prolific water users and sources of water pollution. An Equinix data center in New Jersey recently spilled diesel fuel into a creek feeding the Hackensack River, and construction of a Meta data center in Cheyenne, Wyoming, was found to be the source of a rare, antibiotic-resistant bacteria turning up in sewers.

The EPA, despite publicly discussing efforts to combat PFAS pollution, has slow-walked oversight, canceled Biden-era regulations, and delayed a first-of-its-kind survey to identify PFAS polluters. This inaction leaves communities vulnerable to contamination from a rapidly growing source of toxic chemicals.

The health costs of this regulatory rollback are staggering. The Environmental Protection Network estimated that the EPA's loosened pollution standards could cost Americans $21 billion per year in health impacts, including cancer, heart disease, and lung disease. This far exceeds the $310 billion in savings the EPA claims its carbon-friendly rule will generate, revealing a stark imbalance in how the agency weighs economic benefits against human health.

The timing is particularly troubling given that the world is already on track to exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) of warming above preindustrial levels, a threshold that will trigger droughts, heat waves, wildfires, floods, and other disasters costing Americans trillions of dollars in deaths, illnesses, and property destruction.

Steps Communities Can Take to Protect Themselves From Data Center Pollution

  • Demand Local Oversight: Push state and local officials to implement real oversight with enforcement power, rather than relying on federal agencies that are actively weakening protections. Data center opposition has large, growing, and bipartisan support, making this a politically viable demand.
  • Require Environmental Guarantees: Advocate for developers to guarantee they won't raise local electric bills or drain local water sources. Some politicians are already calling for these protections, which represent a good starting point for community-level action.
  • Establish Do-No-Harm Requirements: Push for regulations that require data centers to prove they won't desecrate the environment before construction begins, rather than managing damage after the fact. While executives and engineers debate whether AI might pose existential risks to humanity in the distant future, the technology is already causing measurable harm through air pollution, water contamination, and toxic chemical exposure.

In reality, the backers of AI are exploiting humanity and denuding nature, only more slowly and without the narrative clarity of a simulation.
