Air taxi companies Joby and Electra have identified a massive untapped market: 32 million trips per year in the United States that are too far to drive comfortably but too close to traditional airports to make sense. This finding, presented at the Farnborough air show, suggests the regional mobility problem air taxis are designed to solve is far larger than previously understood.
The discovery comes as both companies participate in a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) pilot program launched in March 2026, which gives eight companies legal permission to test electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in real-world conditions. This program represents a critical step toward commercial certification, allowing manufacturers to gather data on how their aircraft perform in actual flight corridors rather than controlled laboratory settings.

Electra's chief executive Mark Allen explained the company's approach to identifying the market opportunity. His team analyzed data from road tolls, vehicle tracking, mobile phone location data, credit card transactions, and other sources to map every trip between 50 and 250 miles across the United States. The analysis revealed a striking pattern: 32 million trips fall within this distance range, and 85 percent of those trips started more than 40 miles away from a commercial airport.

The eight companies selected for the program, which includes both Joby and Electra, will generate critical data on operational safety, noise levels, traffic management, and integration with existing airspace. This information will inform the development of regulations and safety standards necessary for commercial air taxi operations. Without this real-world testing, the path to certification would remain uncertain and potentially much longer.
The identification of the 32-million-trip market gap suggests that once these aircraft are certified and operational, demand could be substantial.
