China's asymmetric advantage lies in physical AI and manufacturing. What Would a Winning Strategy Look Like?

Experts argue that the U.S. and its allies must move beyond hubris and develop a more comprehensive approach. Rather than assuming the U.S. can "lock in" advantage through chip design and cloud infrastructure alone, policymakers need a dynamic, holistic view that accounts for how China will play to its asymmetric strengths as technology evolves.

A credible coalition approach would pool allied demand and production into what analysts call "China scale," creating sufficient market pull to enable Western firms to cut costs, fund research and development, and justify capital for bigger builds and more resilient supply chains. This would require coordinating standards and supply chain strategies across the U.S., European Union, Japan, and other trusted partners to manage supply chain exposures while creating an ex-China market for key segments of the AI technology stack.

The stakes could not be higher. If the AI miracle is delayed or never materializes, the consequences extend far beyond the stock market. A collapse in AI valuations could trigger a broader financial crisis, while a failure to maintain technological leadership could shift geopolitical power in ways that reshape global security and economic relationships for decades to come.
