Anthropic reviews applications on a rolling basis, meaning students who apply early have access to more available positions.

While the program FAQ states that students anywhere in the world can apply, the graduate and PhD tracks may initially select from a smaller pool of schools during the pilot period. The application form includes a curated list of 12 African institutions, including the University of Nairobi and United States International University-Africa in Kenya, along with universities in Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Mauritius, and South Africa. Students whose universities are not listed can enter their school in an "Other" option.

In Kenya, for example, Claude Pro subscriptions cost roughly 3,000 Kenyan shillings per month when accounting for the 16% value-added tax the government applies to digital services. Beyond the cash stipend, selected ambassadors receive API credits to fund their software development projects. Kenya is on Anthropic's supported countries list for both the Claude web interface and the API, meaning Kenyan software engineering students can build local products using the tool the role centers on.

Anthropic has already begun building infrastructure in the region. In November 2025, the company announced a partnership with Rwanda's ICT and education ministries and the training provider ALX, which deployed Chidi, a learning companion built on Claude, to more than 200,000 ALX students across the continent.
