Archer Aviation announced on Monday, August 24 that it will build a vertiport at L.A. Live, the downtown Los Angeles sports and entertainment district, marking its largest regional network expansion and a key infrastructure milestone ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games. The vertiport will serve as a landing and takeoff hub for Archer's electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, or eVTOL, which the company plans to operate as a high-end air taxi service connecting corporate clientele and sports teams across Southern California.
L.A. Live, a sprawling entertainment complex roughly the size of 70 National Football League football fields laid side-by-side, surrounds Crypto.com Arena, home to the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Kings, and Los Angeles Sparks, as well as the Peacock Theater. The vertiport announcement came during an event where Archer, sports and entertainment giant AEG Worldwide, and LA28, the organization overseeing the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, unveiled a non-flying mockup of Archer's Midnight aircraft on the L.A. Live plaza.

Archer's Southern California network represents an ambitious infrastructure buildout designed to reduce travel times across one of the world's busiest metropolitan areas. The company plans to cut congested freeway drives to 10 to 20 minute flights, with electric air taxis traveling at speeds up to 150 miles per hour through Los Angeles skies. The L.A. Despite Archer's designation as the official air taxi provider and sponsor of the 2028 Olympic Games, the company still faces regulatory hurdles before commercial operations can begin. To fly eVTOL aircraft during the Olympics, Archer will need Federal Aviation Administration approval for the specific type of commercial service it intends to operate, whether as a self-owned and operated service or through partnerships with an airline. The eVTOL market remains in its infancy, with companies continuing to test their aircraft before launching commercial flights.

Beyond vertiport expansion, Archer has pursued an aggressive acquisition strategy to strengthen its competitive position. In early August, the company made two major purchases to build on a partnership with Anduril Industries, a Costa Mesa-based defense technology company specializing in drones and autonomous systems, to co-develop an autonomous eVTOL military aircraft.
- Overair Acquisition: Archer acquired a patent portfolio and key talent from Overair, a spin-off of Karem Aircraft backed by South Korea's Hanwha Aerospace, which shut down its Santa Ana factories last year.
- Mission Critical Composites Deal: The company acquired manufacturing assets and a 60,000-square-foot factory from Mission Critical Composites, a Huntington Beach-based defense contractor.
