Archer, BETA, and Macquarie Launch Charging Network for Electric Aircraft Across America

Archer Aviation, BETA Technologies, and Macquarie Capital have announced America's Consortium for Electric Skyways (ACES), a plan to deploy charging infrastructure at more than 250 aviation sites across the United States over the next decade. The partnership represents a major step toward making electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft a practical reality for passenger transport and cargo operations in American cities.

Why Does Electric Aircraft Charging Infrastructure Matter?

The eVTOL industry has made impressive strides in aircraft design and safety testing, but one critical piece has been missing: a reliable, standardized way to charge these aircraft at scale. Without a coordinated charging network, even the most advanced electric aircraft would struggle to operate commercially. ACES addresses this gap by creating a shared infrastructure that multiple aircraft manufacturers and operators can use, similar to how gas stations serve different car brands.

The consortium will focus on airports, vertiports, and metropolitan areas where electric aircraft operations are expected to develop first. Priority markets include California, Texas, Florida, and New York, regions where demand for air taxi services and cargo transport is strongest.

How Will the Charging Network Support Different Aircraft Operators?

  • Standardized Technology: BETA Technologies will provide charging systems built on the Combined Charging Standard (CCS), an open charging standard supported by the General Aviation Manufacturers Association and widely adopted throughout the eVTOL industry.
  • Multiple Use Cases: Archer intends to use the network to support future passenger air taxi operations, while BETA customers will utilize the infrastructure for cargo and medical transport applications.
  • Broader Applications: The shared charging model could also support airport ground vehicles and other electric aviation uses, creating a unified ecosystem rather than isolated charging networks.

By adopting an open standard rather than proprietary charging systems, ACES enables competition and innovation while avoiding the fragmentation that could slow the industry's growth. This approach mirrors successful infrastructure models in other transportation sectors, where standardization has been key to widespread adoption.

The timing of ACES is significant. As eVTOL manufacturers move closer to commercial operations, the infrastructure challenge has become increasingly urgent. Archer Aviation and other companies have already conducted successful real-world flight tests, demonstrating that the aircraft technology is advancing rapidly. Without a coordinated charging network in place, however, these aircraft would have nowhere to reliably recharge between flights.

The partnership also reflects a broader industry shift toward interoperability and collaboration. Rather than each company building its own proprietary infrastructure, the three partners recognized that a shared network would accelerate the entire industry's path to commercial operations. This approach reduces costs for individual operators and creates a more attractive market for investors and customers alike.

Over the next decade, ACES aims to establish the foundation that will allow electric aircraft to operate as seamlessly as conventional aircraft do today. Success will depend on coordinating with airport authorities, city planners, and regulators across multiple states, but the partnership's combination of aircraft expertise, infrastructure knowledge, and investment resources positions it well for that challenge.
