Armenia Becomes AI Computing Hub as Firebird Launches CIS Region's Largest GPU Factory
Firebird has officially launched the largest artificial intelligence computing facility in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region in Armenia, establishing the country as a strategic hub for AI research and development. The facility, built using NVIDIA's DSX AI Factory reference design and deployed on Dell PowerEdge servers, provides high-performance computing capacity for developers, startups, enterprises, universities and public institutions to train, fine-tune and deploy AI models locally.
What Makes This AI Factory Different From Other Data Centers?
The Armenian facility represents a significant shift in how frontier markets access cutting-edge computing infrastructure. Unlike traditional data centers that serve primarily as rental spaces, this AI factory is designed as a comprehensive ecosystem for AI development. The facility uses NVIDIA Spectrum-X Ethernet networking and integrates accelerated computing, networking, power and cooling within a unified system. According to Firebird, the design can support up to 40 percent more GPUs within the same physical footprint, improving the value generated from each megawatt of power.
The inauguration was attended by high-level officials including Nikol Pashinyan, Prime Minister of Armenia; Zhaslan Madiyev, Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan; and David Allen, Chargé d'Affaires ad interim at the US Embassy in Armenia, underscoring the geopolitical significance of the project.
How Will Firebird Scale This Infrastructure Across Emerging Markets?
- GPU Expansion: Firebird plans to scale the Armenian AI factory beyond 70,000 NVIDIA Rubin and Blackwell GPUs by the end of 2027, with a three-phase expansion increasing capacity to 300 megawatts of power consumption.
- Geographic Diversification: The company has secured 125 megawatts of AI infrastructure capacity at Data Centre Valley in Kazakhstan, supported by government approvals and export authorization from the US Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security.
- Global Ambitions: Firebird is targeting approximately 2 gigawatts of AI infrastructure capacity across Armenia, Kazakhstan and other frontier markets by the end of 2028, enabling these regions to participate directly in the global AI economy.
The Armenian facility was delivered in just over six months, demonstrating rapid execution capabilities. Schneider Electric supplied critical power infrastructure, including medium- and low-voltage switchgear, three-phase uninterruptible power supply systems and rack enclosures. Vertiv provided the facility's cooling architecture, combining chilled-water technology, advanced controls and TrimCooler technology to manage the intense heat generated by thousands of GPUs running simultaneously.
Why Are Major Tech Companies Investing in This Project?
NVIDIA has announced its intention to invest in Firebird, following an earlier investment by CoreWeave, a leading infrastructure provider. These investments signal confidence in Firebird's ability to execute its expansion plans and establish AI computing as a cornerstone of economic development in emerging markets.

Firebird has already secured Perplexity as one of the facility's first customers. The AI company will use Firebird's high-performance infrastructure to support its answer engine, AI agent services and digital coworker platform, demonstrating immediate commercial viability.

Michael Dell, Chairman and CEO of Dell Technologies, emphasized that the AI factory would expand Armenia's capacity to develop and deploy AI locally while supporting sovereign AI adoption, research and economic growth. This reflects a broader trend among technology leaders to decentralize AI infrastructure away from traditional tech hubs in the United States and Western Europe.
The launch marks the operational debut of Firebird's global AI infrastructure platform and is expected to strengthen Armenia's ability to attract AI-native companies, researchers and technology investment.
