According to data from Featured's analysis of 405 GEO audits conducted between June 2 and August 21, 2026, more than one-third of AI citations came from sites with a Domain Authority under 40, a metric traditionally considered low in SEO. This finding reveals that traditional measures of search authority do not predict which sources AI engines actually cite.

The study examined eight executive search firms and found that the two publicly traded firms, Korn Ferry and Heidrick & Struggles, occupied the top two positions in AI citation frequency, while privately held firms scored significantly lower.

Perplexity produced the highest scores for six of eight firms, likely because its real-time web-search architecture retrieves SEC filings, Glassdoor reviews, and business-press coverage that firms' own websites do not surface.
This pattern mirrors findings from earlier studies of law firms and consulting firms, confirming that confidentiality-first business models cap AI visibility regardless of industry. The category ceiling for executive search firms is 78, lower than consulting at 88 and roughly in line with law's average professional-services performance.
