Big Tech Is Funding Teacher AI Training, But Critics Worry About Who Really Benefits
Major tech companies are funding a massive teacher training initiative through the American Federation of Teachers, but the partnership is raising concerns about corporate influence over how AI enters classrooms. Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic have collectively committed $23 million to the AFT's National Academy for AI Instruction, which aims to train 400,000 educators over five years. The initiative reflects a growing recognition that teachers need structured guidance on AI, yet critics argue the funding arrangement gives tech companies outsized influence over educational decisions.
Why Are Teachers Turning to AI Training Programs?
Teachers face a genuine dilemma. More than half of surveyed teens report using AI for schoolwork, and nearly six in 10 believe AI-enabled cheating is common at their schools. Yet only about four in 10 teachers say their schools offer professional development on AI, and roughly half report receiving no guidance on the technology at all. Without structured training, educators are left to navigate AI's potential benefits and harms on their own.
Darius Saczuk, a high school English as a new language teacher in Queens, exemplifies this challenge. He views AI as both a threat and a necessity. "It's killing our jobs, it's changing our society, it's replacing humans," he said. "In order to retain my job, I need to know how to use AI because it's not going away". His willingness to learn reflects a broader shift among educators who recognize that understanding AI is now essential professional knowledge.
The AFT's training program addresses this gap by offering in-person and virtual courses designed to help teachers understand AI's benefits and potential harms while shaping how it's used in classrooms. Randi Weingarten, AFT president, framed the initiative as a "moral imperative." She explained that "AI training empowers teachers to make informed decisions about how, when or whether to use AI in their instruction".
What's the Controversy Around Tech Company Funding?
The funding structure has drawn sharp criticism from education experts. Microsoft is contributing $12.5 million, OpenAI pledged $10 million, and Anthropic committed $500,000 to the first year. Critics argue this arrangement gives tech companies a backdoor into shaping educational policy and teacher practices, even if unintentionally.
Audrey Watters, author of "Teaching Machines: The History of Personalized Learning," warned that the partnership is "handing more political power over" to big tech. She called it "dangerous" for educators to partner with companies that "seem opposed" to education's core goals. Her concern echoes a broader pattern in education technology: companies provide free training and resources to teachers in exchange for feedback and product advocacy, creating a cycle that benefits corporate interests.
Justin Reich, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor and author of "Failure to Disrupt: Why Technology Alone Can't Transform Education," noted that tech companies have long used this playbook. Google, for example, entrenched itself in schools by offering free educational software and creating a corps of Google Certified Educators who promote the company's tools to peers. "Their goal is to get people to become lifelong consumers," Reich said, adding that "there's no evidence that the adoption of Google or Microsoft products lead to better outcomes, happier teachers, more efficient school systems or anything".
How Are Tech Companies Expanding AI in Education Right Now?
Even as the training debate unfolds, AI tools are already spreading through schools. OpenAI recently announced three new education-focused plugins designed specifically for K-12 teachers, college educators, and college students. These tools are available through ChatGPT Edu and ChatGPT for Teachers, a free resource for verified U.S. K-12 educators and school districts.
The new offerings include:
- K-12 Educator Plugin: Helps teachers plan and create classroom materials by working with existing documents and course materials to create differentiated resources, design interactive visuals, and surface actionable insights.
- College Educator Plugin: Enables course design, teaching, and academic planning, allowing faculty to update syllabi, create interactive websites or multimedia assessments, and adapt materials for diverse learners.
- College Student Plugin: Helps students turn their existing coursework into personalized learning experiences, including guided tutoring, practice tools, and AI-generated study guides, quizzes, flashcards, and visual explanations.
OpenAI frames these tools as supporting learning rather than shortcutting it. The company stated that "AI should support learning, not shortcut it, and the best learning experiences keep educators and students in control". However, critics question whether expanding AI tools actually achieves this goal, especially given evidence that AI use can harm learning outcomes.
What Does Research Say About AI and Learning?
The expansion of AI in education is occurring despite limited evidence that it improves learning. MIT researchers conducted a study using electroencephalography (EEG) to measure brain activity while students wrote essays. Students who used AI for research showed significantly less brain activity and had far less ability to recall what they wrote when asked about it later, compared to students who used the internet for research. This suggests that relying on AI tools may undermine deeper learning and retention.
The concern extends beyond essay writing. A 2025 study from the Center for Democracy and Technology found that K-12 teachers widely complained about lacking the necessary resources to understand how to integrate AI into schools or tackle potential harms AI may cause to students' learning and personal development. Rather than addressing these concerns, some worry that new AI tools simply shift more work to the technology rather than helping teachers regain control of the academic process.
"The goal is not for the K-12 plugin to handle every possible task on its own. How Can Teachers Navigate AI Responsibly in Their Classrooms?
As AI tools proliferate, educators need practical strategies to maintain pedagogical control and prioritize genuine learning. Consider these approaches:
- Start Small and Intentional: Rather than adopting multiple AI tools at once, focus on one specific use case at a time. One educator noted, "A great way to get started is to focus on one thing at a time: this month I'm only going to use the plugin for creating exit tickets, and next month, assessments".
- Treat AI Outputs as Starting Points: Recognize that AI-generated materials are drafts requiring teacher refinement, not finished products. This maintains educator judgment and ensures alignment with pedagogical goals and local standards.
- Prioritize Learning Science Over Convenience: When evaluating AI tools, prioritize evidence-based learning practices over time-saving features. Ask whether the tool genuinely supports deeper understanding or merely automates tasks.
- Maintain Transparency With Students: Clearly communicate when and how AI is being used in the classroom, and teach students to understand both the benefits and limitations of AI-assisted learning.
Microsoft's Justin Spelhaug stated that the company believes "AI can help reduce administrative burdens, personalize learning and create more time for students," while emphasizing that "there is no substitute for the role of a teacher". Yet the tension remains: as tech companies fund teacher training and expand AI tools, educators must decide whether these resources genuinely serve learning or primarily serve corporate interests.
The AFT has stated that companies cannot promote products during training sessions, and Weingarten emphasized that she doesn't think "students have to use AI in schools". However, with AI already embedded in many school systems and tech companies continuing to expand their educational offerings, the question of who controls AI's role in education remains unresolved. Teachers, administrators, and policymakers will need to carefully evaluate whether these tools truly empower educators or subtly reshape classrooms in ways that benefit technology companies more than students.
