Boston Dynamics Is Building a Robotics Hub in Massachusetts, Creating 1,250 Jobs by 2033
Boston Dynamics announced a major expansion in Massachusetts, committing $100 million to transform a 323,000-square-foot facility in Waltham into an advanced robotics and artificial intelligence center. The company plans to consolidate operations from three nearby locations and expects to create 1,250 new jobs by 2033, signaling significant growth in the robotics manufacturing sector.
What Is Boston Dynamics Building in This New Facility?
The new center at 1601 Trapelo Road, known as Reservoir Place, will serve as a hub for multiple aspects of Boston Dynamics' business. Located just across Route 128 and approximately 12 miles outside Boston, the facility will house advanced manufacturing operations, artificial intelligence research and development, workforce training programs, and production capabilities for the company's three robot platforms.
Boston Dynamics currently offers three robots in its portfolio: Spot, a quadruped robot used for industrial inspections and public safety applications; Stretch, a box-moving robot deployed in logistics and retail settings; and Atlas, an electric humanoid platform currently in development. The expansion will give the company the space and resources needed to scale production and launch new capabilities across these platforms.
"Boston Dynamics has called Waltham home for many years, and this expansion is a reflection of how fast our industry is moving. The investment gives our team the space and resources we need to launch our third robot platform this decade," said Amanda McMaster, Interim CEO of Boston Dynamics.

How Will This Expansion Support Massachusetts' Robotics Ecosystem?
- State Investment: The Healey-Driscoll Administration awarded Boston Dynamics a $25 million Economic Development Incentive Program (EDIP) award to fund renovation, buildout activities, manufacturing operations, and workforce training tied to the company's robot platforms.
- Job Creation Timeline: Boston Dynamics anticipates creating 1,250 new jobs by 2033, contributing significantly to the regional economy and establishing the facility as a major employment hub for robotics and AI talent.
- Broader State Strategy: This expansion aligns with the Healey-Driscoll Administration's economic strategy, which includes a $25 million robotics investment through the Mass Wins Act and a proposed $75 million investment in applied artificial intelligence and quantum technologies.
- Workforce Development: The facility will consolidate manufacturing, training, research, and development under one roof, creating a hub designed to train the next generation of robotics and artificial intelligence talent.
Massachusetts officials emphasized the strategic importance of retaining Boston Dynamics in the state. Governor Maura Healey noted that the company has played a central role in defining the global robotics industry from Massachusetts and that the state wanted to support their continued growth. The expansion demonstrates how the state's talent pool, innovation ecosystem, and commitment to advanced manufacturing make it an attractive location for robotics companies.
"Companies like Boston Dynamics choose to grow in Massachusetts because of our unmatched talent, innovation ecosystem and commitment to supporting industries that will drive the future economy," stated Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll.

When Will the New Facility Open?
Boston Dynamics is kicking off a significant renovation and construction project at the site and expects to move into the new facility in phases beginning in mid-2027. The project is being developed in partnership with BXP, which has owned the property since 1998. This phased approach will allow the company to transition operations gradually while maintaining current production and research activities.
The timing of this expansion reflects the accelerating pace of the robotics industry. As Boston Dynamics prepares to launch its third robot platform this decade, the consolidated facility will provide the infrastructure needed to scale manufacturing, conduct advanced research, and train workers for roles in robotics and artificial intelligence. The investment underscores the company's confidence in the long-term growth potential of the mobile robotics market and its commitment to maintaining its headquarters in the Boston area.
