According to CodeAI's research, only 16% of high school leaders report that all of their students are learning the technical knowledge needed to understand AI in the classroom. At the same time, 75% of high school students believe understanding AI will be more important for their futures than it is today, creating a disconnect between student expectations and current educational offerings.

The emphasis on critical thinking reflects a broader concern in education about how AI tools are being deployed. Rather than treating AI as a "black box" whose inner workings remain mysterious, CodeAI is promoting what CEO Karim Meghji calls a "glass box" approach.

  • Hour of AI: An introductory program designed to reach millions of students with the basics of using AI thoughtfully and responsibly.
  • AI Foundations Course: A free, year-long high school course that OpenAI will support with expertise in AI systems, safety, and responsible use.
  • Builders Challenge: CodeAI's inaugural challenge that gives high school students opportunities to create projects with AI, receive mentorship from OpenAI team members, and showcase their work alongside their teachers.
  • Career Journeys Component: A program introducing students to OpenAI researchers, engineers, and other leaders to show how professionals in the field use and develop AI.
  • Joint Advisory Council: A new council bringing together specialists in child development, youth public policy, and learning science to provide ongoing guidance on responsible AI practices and emerging risks.

OpenAI will provide mentors for the Builders Challenge and contribute technical expertise to the AI Foundations course. The partnership also emphasizes that AI should support rather than replace guidance from teachers, families, and other trusted people in students' lives.
