College Students Are Quietly Rejecting ChatGPT. Here's Why Universities Can't Ignore Them.

A small but vocal group of college students is pushing back against the AI revolution sweeping campuses, raising questions about whether universities should be betting millions on partnerships with companies like OpenAI. At the University of Colorado Boulder, graduate student Mirakle Wright discovered something surprising while researching her peers: many students actively avoid generative AI tools like ChatGPT, and they have carefully considered reasons for doing so.

Why Are Students Rejecting AI Tools?

Wright, 25, found that students who describe themselves as "AI-avoidant" cite a range of concerns that go far beyond simple technophobia. In her research sampling of CU students, she documented multiple reasons for abstaining from popular generative AI platforms.

  • Environmental Impact: Students expressed concerns about the high water consumption required to cool the data centers that power AI systems.
  • Data Privacy: Worries about how their personal information and university data might be used or retained by AI companies.
  • Intellectual Integrity: Objections to how AI systems scrape existing creative work without permission to train their models.
  • Cognitive Decline: Self-reported concerns that using AI tools diminishes their own critical thinking and writing abilities.

"The majority of my participants flat out don't think AI has a place in education," Wright explained. "Most said something like the university is supposed to foster intellectualism and debate and analysis, and that AI is the complete opposite to that, so there's a lot of tension there".

What Are Universities Doing With AI?

Meanwhile, universities across Colorado are making major financial commitments to bring AI into campus life. The University of Colorado system announced a $2 million partnership with OpenAI to create a CU-specific version of ChatGPT, while Colorado State University in Fort Collins developed its own CSU version of the platform. By March 2026, more than 28,000 people at CU Boulder had already linked standard ChatGPT accounts to their university email addresses, including over 3,000 faculty and staff members.

University officials argue this approach is necessary and responsible. Michele Ames, CU's Vice President of Communications, stated that "it's better for us to be in a position to help students learn how to work with the technology and build up their critical thinking skills and deal with this honestly". The university framed the partnership as a way to provide equitable access to AI tools in a secure environment, especially since tens of thousands of students are already using standard ChatGPT accounts independently.

However, this reasoning has not convinced skeptical students. Communications major Nate Wasylik stood before the CU Board of Regents in April to oppose the partnership, calling ChatGPT "the giant plagiarism machine" and urging the board to protect student data. "I didn't think education was about any of that," Wasylik said. "AI is adverse to the idea of learning. An educational institution should be focused more on teaching us than making us ready for a job".

How Are Universities Responding to Student Concerns?

The backlash has been substantial enough to force changes. Nearly 800 CU researchers, students, and professors from departments spanning computer science to creative writing to business signed an open letter opposing the partnership. The university initially planned to roll out access to its ChatGPT version in March, but delayed the launch until later in the summer due to the overwhelming criticism.

In response to student and faculty concerns, CU made several amendments to its agreement with OpenAI. The university implemented a requirement that students complete training before accessing the CU AI program, and modified the contract to explicitly prevent OpenAI from using campus data to train its large language models. "The critiques were heard," Ames acknowledged. "They are acknowledged".

Elizabeth McKinnie, a 28-year-old Ph.D. student in CU Boulder's information science department and former Microsoft software engineer, represents another perspective on the resistance. McKinnie had early access to ChatGPT through her previous employer but said the technology would have pushed her to leave software engineering entirely. After hearing computer scientist Timnit Gebru, former co-lead of Google's ethical AI research team, speak about the harms of generative AI, McKinnie received an email announcing CU's OpenAI partnership just hours later. "Aligning yourself with a company doing terrible things is not a good thing," McKinnie said.

How to Evaluate AI Tools in Educational Settings

As universities navigate these tensions, several key considerations emerge for institutions weighing AI adoption:

  • Distinguish Learning Contexts: McKinnie emphasized that there is a meaningful difference between using AI when you are already skilled at something versus when you are learning something new. "You don't really learn something until you do it yourself," she noted.
  • Establish Clear Data Protections: Universities should ensure contracts explicitly prevent AI companies from using institutional data for model training, and require transparency about data handling practices.
  • Include Student Voice: Institutions should involve students and faculty in decision-making processes before announcing major AI partnerships, rather than presenting them as fait accompli.
  • Provide Genuine Choice: Rather than mandating AI adoption, universities could offer training and access while respecting students who choose not to use these tools.

CU information science professor Casey Fiesler, one of Wright's advisors, has observed a cultural shift among younger people regarding AI. "They're like, 'Oh my gosh, there's all this AI slop and my parents keep telling me that AI is the future and I have to learn it, yuck,'" Fiesler said, noting that AI has become "cringe" in some student circles. Some students even peer-pressure each other about AI use, with comments like "Seriously, dude, you can't write an email on your own?".

What makes this moment significant is that student resistance to AI is not driven by lack of understanding or access, but by deliberate ethical reasoning. Wright described her peers' opposition as reminiscent of wartime pacifists, calling them "conscientious objectors" to the AI revolution. This framing suggests that the tension between universities and AI-skeptical students reflects deeper questions about the purpose of higher education itself, and whether institutions should prioritize workforce preparation or intellectual development as their primary mission.

Instead, they represent legitimate questions about how institutions should balance innovation with their core educational values.
