Database Research Gets a Major Upgrade: ClickHouse Labs Launches With Carnegie Mellon's Andy Pavlo
ClickHouse, the fast open-source database company, has announced the creation of ClickHouse Labs, a new research division led by Andy Pavlo, one of the database industry's most respected researchers. Pavlo, an associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University, will serve as Vice President of Database Research and build a team focused on solving some of the hardest problems in modern data systems as artificial intelligence reshapes how organizations process and analyze information.
Why Does Database Research Matter Now?
The timing of ClickHouse Labs reflects a fundamental shift in how data systems need to work. As AI agents become more embedded in software applications, they generate higher query volumes at tighter latency requirements. Traditional databases weren't designed for this workload pattern. ClickHouse Labs will pursue foundational research across database and data architectures, query processing, systems performance, and infrastructure for both ClickHouse and PostgreSQL databases. Pavlo brings significant credibility to this mission. Throughout his career, he has received several of the database community's highest honors, including the IEEE TCDE Ramez Elmasri Database Education Award, VLDB Early Career Award, NSF CAREER Award, Sloan Research Fellowship, and ACM SIGMOD Jim Gray Best Dissertation Award in Databases. He previously co-founded OtterTune, a company that applied machine learning to database optimization.

How Will ClickHouse Labs Approach Research Differently?

ClickHouse's President of Product and Technology, Yury Izrailevsky, previously served as VP of Engineering at Google, where foundational research often emerged from the company's most demanding technical problems. Google's Spanner paper introduced a new model for globally distributed databases, and the Transformer architecture paper laid the foundation for modern large language models. ClickHouse Labs aims to follow this same pattern.
