Electric Air Taxis Are Almost Here, But There's One Major Problem Nobody Talks About
Electric air taxis are on the verge of becoming reality, with two leading companies pushing through final FAA certification stages and planning passenger operations as soon as late 2026. However, the biggest obstacle to widespread adoption isn't technology or regulation; it's the lack of physical infrastructure needed to actually operate these aircraft in cities.
Which Companies Are Leading the Electric Air Taxi Race?
Two frontrunners are dominating the eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) market: Archer Aviation and Joby Aviation. Both companies are currently in the fourth phase of the FAA's five-phase type certification process, meaning their aircraft are being rigorously tested and evaluated for safety and performance.
Joby Aviation's S4 is the furthest along in certification. The five-seat aircraft is powered by six electric motors controlling tilting propellers, giving it a top speed of 173 knots and a range of 130 nautical miles on a single charge. It's designed to carry one pilot and four passengers, with enough storage for luggage. Joby has secured major backing from Toyota for manufacturing, a $60 million investment from Delta Air Lines, and acquired both Uber's Elevate air taxi division and Blade Air Mobility's passenger transportation operations.
Archer Aviation's Midnight eVTOL is close behind. It's also a five-seat aircraft with similar passenger capacity, but uses a different design with 12 fixed propellers: six for vertical takeoff and landing, and six for forward flight. This design makes the Midnight slightly heavier, resulting in a lower top speed of 130 knots and shorter range of 87 nautical miles. However, Archer advertises a major advantage: the Midnight can recharge in as little as ten minutes.
Archer has backing from United Airlines, which has ordered up to 200 aircraft, plus manufacturing support from Stellantis and international terminal infrastructure from Jetex. The company has also been named the official exclusive air taxi for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and Paralympics.
What's the Real Barrier to Launching Air Taxi Services?
Despite both companies being on track for certification in late 2026 or early 2027, a critical infrastructure gap threatens to delay actual passenger operations. As of now, the United States has only one operational vertipad, located in Blackstone, Virginia, and it's used exclusively for research, development, and testing.
While several cities have planned to construct vertipads for electric air taxis, none have been completed yet. This is crucial because electric air taxis cannot simply use existing helicopter landing pads. The infrastructure requirements are fundamentally different.
How to Understand Vertiport Infrastructure Requirements
- Charging Systems: Vertipads require dedicated charging grids and battery management units to support frequent aircraft turnarounds, unlike heliports which serve fuel-powered aircraft.
- Fire Suppression: Battery fires behave differently from helicopter engine fires, requiring specialized fire suppression systems designed specifically for lithium-ion battery incidents.
- Operational Markings: Vertipads need different ground markings and safety designations compared to heliports, reflecting the unique operational characteristics of electric aircraft.
While electric air taxis produce significantly less noise than helicopters, building and operating a vertiport still contributes to urban noise pollution, making site selection and community approval crucial factors in development.
The two companies are pursuing different commercial strategies to address this challenge. Joby is building a vertically integrated ecosystem where it develops the aircraft and operates the network itself. The company holds an exclusive six-year agreement with the Dubai Road and Transport Authority to operate commercial air taxi routes, and plans to launch in Dubai before expanding to major U.S. cities like New York and Los Angeles using infrastructure from its Blade acquisition.
Archer Aviation is taking a more traditional aircraft manufacturer approach, relying heavily on orders from third-party customers like United Airlines, Abu Dhabi Aviation, and Ethiopian Airlines. The company is working to certify the Midnight with the UAE for initial operations in Abu Dhabi, then plans to expand through its airline partnerships.
Both companies recognize that FAA certification alone won't guarantee success. The real test will be whether cities can build the necessary vertiport infrastructure fast enough to match the aircraft's readiness. Without charging stations, fire suppression systems, and operational facilities in place, even certified air taxis will remain grounded, unable to serve the passengers they're designed to carry.
