Elon Musk's Wikipedia Rival Grokipedia Has Quietly Stopped Working
Elon Musk's ambitious attempt to create an AI-powered alternative to Wikipedia has ground to a halt, with Grokipedia showing no signs of active development for months despite still attracting millions of visitors. According to an investigation by Lawfare, the site, which launched in October 2025 as xAI's answer to what Musk viewed as Wikipedia's bias, has become a frozen, outdated copy of the encyclopedia it was meant to replace.
What Happened to Grokipedia?
Grokipedia was designed to take human-written Wikipedia articles, run them through xAI's large language model (LLM), a type of artificial intelligence trained on vast amounts of text data, and allow users to suggest edits that would theoretically make the content more aligned with Musk's worldview. The project generated significant media attention when it launched, partly because it quickly became mired in controversy. The site heavily cited a neo-Nazi forum as a source, promoted conspiracy theories, and portrayed Tesla's Cybertruck in an unrealistically positive light.
Now, the project appears to have been abandoned. Lawfare's investigation found that no entry on Grokipedia has changed in more than three months, and the site's edit log has broken entirely, making it impossible to track which user-suggested changes were accepted or rejected. Even when Lawfare submitted a straightforward factual update about SpaceX's June initial public offering (IPO), a development that any comprehensive knowledge base should include, the Grokipedia entry remained unchanged.
Why Should You Care About a Failed Wikipedia Clone?
The collapse of Grokipedia matters because the site still receives substantial traffic and continues to spread potentially inaccurate information. Similarweb data shows that Grokipedia received over six million visits in June alone, despite being essentially abandoned. Hundreds of thousands of websites are still citing Musk's encyclopedia as a source, which means misinformation could continue spreading across the internet even though the site is no longer being maintained or updated.
The situation is particularly concerning because the most recent approved update Lawfare could locate dated back to April 24, 2026, when an entry about OpenAI's ChatGPT was modified. Even pages that reportedly draw millions of views have not been updated in months. As of the investigation, there were 13,002 user-submitted suggestions sitting unresolved in the review queue, trapped in a state of limbo.
How to Understand What Went Wrong with Grokipedia
- Technical Breakdown: The site's edit log has completely malfunctioned, making it impossible to determine which changes were approved or rejected by the AI system, essentially rendering the platform non-functional as an editable encyclopedia.
- Lack of Human Oversight: By January 2026, the Tow Center for Digital Journalism observed that xAI's Grok AI was making more edits to its own articles than acting on human-suggested changes, indicating the project was losing momentum and human engagement.
- Stalled Development: No new decisions on pending edits have been issued, article text appears frozen with outdated information, and past decisions were retroactively reverted without explanation, suggesting either abandonment or a major unannounced revision.
The project is now owned by SpaceX, following a merger of Musk's AI efforts. Lawfare concluded that the site has become "a completely redundant and misinformation-filled copy of Wikipedia, which remains one of the last bastions of human-edited and verified sources of information on the internet". The publication noted that "as far as we can tell, no entry has changed in more than three months" and that "the 'live' change feed is gone, past decisions were retroactively reverted without explanation, new decisions are not being issued, and article text appears frozen (and, in some cases, outdated)".

Futurism reached out to SpaceX for an update on the project, but given the track record of Musk's companies in avoiding media interaction, a response seems unlikely. The fate of Grokipedia remains unclear: it is unknown whether xAI is preparing a major revision or has altogether abandoned active development of the project.
