Eurostar Becomes First Rail Operator With ChatGPT App, as AI Traffic to Its Website Surges Fivefold

Eurostar has launched its own app directly within ChatGPT, making it the first rail operator to offer such a service in the United Kingdom, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Through this integration, passengers can search for Eurostar journeys, compare departure times, and check available fares using conversational language, either typed or spoken, without filling out traditional search forms.

Why Is AI Becoming Central to Travel Planning?

The move reflects a dramatic shift in how customers search for travel information. Between January 2025 and June 2026, traffic to the Eurostar website originating from artificial intelligence platforms increased fivefold. In June 2026 alone, ChatGPT accounted for 85 percent of all traffic to eurostar.com coming from AI applications. Even more striking, between May and July 2026, AI applications were responsible for approximately 0.8 to 1 percent of ticket bookings made on the platform, demonstrating that conversational AI is not just a search tool but an actual sales driver.

"Search habits are changing rapidly, and travellers are increasingly using conversational tools to find information and plan their journeys," said François Le Doze, Eurostar's commercial director.

This shift prompted Eurostar to establish a direct presence within ChatGPT itself. The company recognized that customers were already planning journeys through conversational AI, and the operator needed to meet them where they were already searching.

How Does the Eurostar ChatGPT App Work?

  • Natural Language Search: Passengers can request information conversationally, such as "Find me a train between London and Paris for a weekend" or "Compare departure times between Brussels and Amsterdam," without navigating traditional booking forms.
  • Real-Time Information Access: The app provides instant access to timetables, journey times, and available fares directly within the ChatGPT conversation interface.
  • Account Linking Requirement: To use the service, users must link their ChatGPT account to the Eurostar app available on the platform, ensuring a seamless connection between the two services.
  • Partial Integration Model: After selecting a train and checking fares within ChatGPT, travelers are redirected to eurostar.com to complete the booking and payment, meaning ChatGPT functions primarily as a search and planning tool rather than a full transaction channel at this stage.

The integration leverages OpenAI's app ecosystem, which allows external services and information to be embedded directly into conversations. Users interact with these apps using natural language, making the experience feel like talking to a knowledgeable travel assistant rather than navigating a website.

What Are Eurostar's Plans for Expanding the Service?

Eurostar has stated it intends to develop the ChatGPT app gradually. Features under consideration include easier destination recommendations, a visual representation of the network, travel inspiration tools, and simpler access to certain fares and offers. The company will also explore the possibility of using other chatbots as AI-assisted travel planning becomes more widespread, signaling that this ChatGPT integration is just the beginning of a broader AI strategy.

This digital expansion aligns with Eurostar's capacity growth plans. The operator currently operates a fleet of 51 high-speed trains serving over 20 destinations across France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and the United Kingdom. To support future growth, the company has ordered up to 50 Celestia double-decker trains from French manufacturer Alstom, with the first expected to enter service in May 2031. The ChatGPT app represents a strategic effort to drive bookings for these expanded services by meeting customers in their preferred search environment.

The launch underscores a broader industry trend: as large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT become primary interfaces for information discovery, companies across travel, retail, and services are racing to establish direct presence within these platforms. For Eurostar, the data is compelling. With AI-driven traffic growing 500 percent in less than two years and already contributing to nearly 1 percent of bookings, the investment in ChatGPT integration appears to be a calculated response to where customer behavior is heading, not merely an experimental feature.
