Third, Google Cloud is growing at 82 percent year-over-year with 36 percent margins, lapping Amazon Web Services (AWS) with AI startups and serving as a second business model on the same silicon.
Real-world partnerships demonstrate this strategy in action. Ryanair, Europe's largest airline by passenger numbers, signed a five-year deal with Google Cloud to deploy Gemini Enterprise across its 35,000 employees for crew scheduling, workflow automation, and decision-making. The airline also plans to use DeepMind's AlphaEvolve and WeatherNext models to optimize fleet operations and maintenance scheduling, with the goal of growing from 216 million annual passengers to 300 million by 2034.

Google's recent leadership changes included high-profile exits. Jeff Dean, a Google veteran employee since the company's early days, and three other senior builders founded Discovery Loop, while Noam Shazeer moved to OpenAI and John Jumper joined Anthropic. However, these departures reflect a different reality than they might appear. Google produces talent; departures at this level are the price of having a bench worth raiding. Alphabet is investing in and providing compute to startups founded by departing executives, and several thousand people remain on the Gemini team behind Kavukcuoglu.
The broader competitive landscape shows Google is not losing ground where it matters most. Google Cloud is increasingly allocating company resources to its cloud business, with more than a fifth of TPU (Tensor Processing Unit) shipments through late 2027 reportedly sold directly to Anthropic. This means Google is selling the infrastructure tools to its model rivals, a second business model that does not depend on winning the frontier race.

The frontier capability gap is real, and the AI coding gap is real. If frontier capability turns out to be the entire game with a winner-take-most outcome, Google's product-focused strategy could prove insufficient.
