Google's New 'Gemini Intelligence' Is About to Automate Your Phone and Laptop
Google is preparing a major shift in how you interact with your devices by embedding AI automation directly into Android phones, smartwatches, cars, and an entirely new category of laptops called Googlebooks. Starting this summer, users with the latest Samsung Galaxy S26 and Google Pixel 10 phones will gain access to "Gemini Intelligence," a proactive AI system that can navigate multiple apps and complete tasks without manual intervention.
What Can Gemini Intelligence Actually Do on Your Phone?
Gemini Intelligence leverages neural processing units (NPUs), specialized chips on premium smartphones designed to run AI tasks efficiently. The system can handle multi-step automation across apps, meaning it can complete complex tasks that normally require you to switch between applications and manually copy information.
Google provided concrete examples of what Gemini Intelligence will accomplish. The AI can book a front-row bike for your spin class, locate your class syllabus in Gmail, and automatically add required textbooks to your shopping cart. It can also build a shopping cart from a grocery list stored in your notes app, or create a complete travel itinerary on Expedia using just a photo of a travel brochure. Users will receive notifications tracking what Gemini is doing in the background, maintaining transparency about the AI's actions.
Beyond app automation, Gemini Intelligence will power a new custom widget experience. A feature called "Create My Widget" lets you describe the widget you want, and Gemini builds it using data sources of your choice. Examples include a weather widget showing only wind speed and rainfall, or a recipe widget suggesting daily meal ideas.
Google is also integrating Gemini with Android's Autofill feature, allowing the AI to automatically complete forms using data from your connected apps. This integration will be entirely opt-in, giving users full control over when Gemini accesses their information.
How Will Gemini Expand Beyond Phones This Year?
The rollout timeline extends well beyond smartphones. Galaxy S26 and Pixel 10 users will receive the initial app automation capabilities this summer, but Google plans to expand Gemini Intelligence to additional device categories throughout 2026. The expansion includes:
- Android Smartwatches: Bringing task automation to wearable devices later in 2026
- Connected Cars: Enabling Gemini Intelligence in Android-powered vehicles for in-car automation and assistance
- Smart Glasses: Extending AI capabilities to wearable visual devices for hands-free interaction
- Laptops: Introducing a new "Googlebook" category designed from the ground up for Gemini Intelligence
Google emphasized that it spent months fine-tuning multi-step automation on Galaxy S26 and Pixel 10 devices, focusing on popular food delivery and rideshare apps to ensure seamless interactions.
What Is a Googlebook, and Why Does It Matter?
Perhaps the most significant announcement is the introduction of Googlebooks, a completely new laptop category that represents a fundamental shift in how Google approaches computing devices. Unlike Chromebooks, which are built around a web browser and operating system, Googlebooks are designed from the ground up to prioritize AI as the central computing paradigm.
"Now, as computing shifts from an operating system to an intelligence system, we see an opportunity to rethink laptops again," explained Alex Kuscher, senior director for laptops and tablets at Google.

Googlebooks will feature a "Magic Pointer" that transforms your mouse cursor into an AI-powered assistant. As you hover over apps and content, the cursor comes alive with contextual suggestions from Gemini. You can point at a date in an email to instantly set up a meeting, or select two images, like your living room and a new couch, to visualize them together.
The laptops will also allow you to remotely access mobile apps from your Android phone directly on your laptop screen, eliminating the need to download separate versions or deal with awkward touch-screen emulation. "No downloading, no awkward emulated touch-screen controls; it just works," Kuscher stated.
Major PC manufacturers including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo will launch the first Googlebooks this fall. While Google did not announce pricing, the company indicated that Googlebooks will feature premium craftsmanship and materials, suggesting they will be positioned above standard Chromebooks in terms of cost and capability. The operating system details remain unclear, though Google noted that Googlebooks will combine the best features of both Android and ChromeOS, likely referring to the rumored Aluminum OS that would merge both platforms.
How to Prepare for Gemini Intelligence on Your Devices
- Check Device Compatibility: Verify that your phone is a Galaxy S26, Pixel 10, or other premium Android device with an NPU to access Gemini Intelligence features when they launch this summer
- Review Privacy Settings: When Gemini Intelligence becomes available, carefully review opt-in settings for Autofill integration and background task notifications to control what data the AI can access
- Explore Chrome Features: Starting in June, Gemini will arrive in Chrome for Android in the US, offering web page summaries, image generation, and Auto Browse capabilities for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers
- Consider Googlebook Adoption: If you're planning a laptop purchase later in 2026, evaluate whether a Googlebook's AI-first design aligns with your workflow needs before committing to a new device
What About Chrome and Web Browsing?
Google is also bringing Gemini to Chrome for Android, expanding capabilities that already exist in the iOS version of the browser. Starting in June in the United States, Android users will access Gemini through a new icon on Chrome's toolbar, opening a panel where they can ask the AI to summarize web pages, generate images using Google's Nano Banana model, and perform other tasks.
A more advanced feature called "Auto Browse" will allow Chrome to perform web-based tasks independently, such as ordering food, booking appointments, and reserving parking spots. This capability will initially be available only to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US. Google emphasized that all these features include the same security protections available on desktop, defending against emerging threats like prompt injection attacks. Auto Browse is designed to request confirmation before completing sensitive actions like purchases or social media posts.
The expansion of Gemini across Android devices, wearables, vehicles, and an entirely new laptop category signals Google's commitment to making AI a foundational layer of computing rather than an optional tool. By embedding Gemini Intelligence into the devices people use daily, Google is positioning itself to compete directly with other AI-first platforms while maintaining control over the user experience across its ecosystem.
