Google's Video Remix Brings AI-Powered Editing to Photos App, Powered by Gemini Omni

Google is launching Video Remix, a new AI-powered video editing feature in Google Photos that lets you transform your videos with simple text prompts, powered by the company's Gemini Omni model. The feature is rolling out today to Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers in the United States and select countries.

What Is Video Remix and How Does It Work?

Video Remix lives in the Create tab within Google Photos and offers a library of templates to help you reimagine your videos without needing video editing software expertise. Instead of spending hours learning complex tools like Adobe Premiere Pro, you can describe what you want, and Gemini Omni handles the editing automatically. Google says the feature processes your request and produces an edited video in just a few seconds.

The examples Google provided show fairly subtle but practical applications. You might ask Gemini to overlay a watercolor filter on a video, add morning lighting to a dark scene, or insert a completely different background. The feature also allows you to insert yourself into a video using a digital avatar you create, which is watermarked with Google's SynthID tool to prevent misuse.

What Powers Video Remix Behind the Scenes?

Video Remix runs on Gemini Omni, a model Google announced in May that the company describes as letting you "create anything from any input." Gemini Omni is positioned as the successor to earlier models like Nano Banana and Google's Veo 3.1 video generator. The key difference is that Gemini Omni accepts a wider range of inputs and better understands how physical forces like gravity and kinetic energy work, making the videos it creates more realistic and true-to-life.

How to Access and Use Video Remix

  • Subscription Tier Required: Video Remix is available exclusively to Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers, meaning free Google Photos users will not have access to this feature.
  • Geographic Availability: The feature is rolling out in the United States and select countries, so availability may vary depending on your location.
  • Getting Started: Open Google Photos, navigate to the Create tab, select Video Remix, choose a template or describe your desired edit, and let Gemini Omni process your request in seconds.

This launch reflects Google's broader strategy of embedding Gemini AI capabilities across its consumer products. Earlier this year, Google announced that its Pixel 10 smartphone, equipped with the Tensor G5 processor, would be able to fully utilize Gemini's AI capabilities. The company has also integrated Gemini into other hardware, including the Pixel Watch 4, which lets users ask Gemini questions by tilting their wrist, and Pixel Buds 2a true wireless earbuds that can talk to Gemini.

Looking ahead, Google is scheduled to hold its "Made by Google" event on August 12, 2026, in New York City at 6 PM Eastern Time, where the company is expected to announce the Pixel 11 series and Pixel Watch 5. These new devices will likely continue Google's trend of tightly integrating Gemini AI features into its hardware ecosystem.

Video Remix represents a shift in how everyday users interact with AI. Rather than requiring technical knowledge or expensive software subscriptions, Google is making advanced video editing accessible through natural language prompts. For content creators, social media enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to enhance their videos without learning complex editing software, this feature could significantly lower the barrier to professional-looking video production.
