A Chinese robotics company is taking physical AI out of factories and into fashion shows, art galleries, and social media feeds by treating tiny companion robots as customizable characters rather than utilitarian machines. Leim Technology announced a major partnership with Trends Media Group, a Shanghai-based fashion and lifestyle publisher, to expand bibo, its miniature embodied AI robot, into an open ecosystem where designers, artists, and everyday users can shape how the robots look, behave, and interact.

Most physical AI startups focus on industrial applications, warehouse automation, or humanoid robots designed to perform specific tasks. Leim is taking a fundamentally different approach by positioning bibo as a companion for personal expression and emotional connection. The robot uses visual, audio, touch, and motion sensing to perceive its environment, then responds through facial expressions, head movements, and sounds. Critically, these responses are generated in real time through perception systems rather than pre-programmed dance routines, meaning each robot can react differently to the same stimulus.

The partnership with Trends Media Group, which has published Harper's BAZAAR in China since its founding in 1993, signals a strategic shift toward treating embodied AI as a lifestyle and fashion product. The company announced an eight-figure yuan financing round led by Trends Media Group, with participation from Hongyi Asset Management, valuing Leim at 160 million yuan. The funding will support product development, content creation, and expansion into new sales channels.

How Are Users Actually Engaging With These Robots?

Early adoption data reveals surprising engagement patterns. According to Leim, active users averaged more than 120 minutes of daily companionship time and more than 60 multimodal interactions per day as of September 1. Between July 1 and September 1, users created more than 40,000 photos with bibo, suggesting the robots are becoming social media objects as much as interactive devices.

Users have brought bibo into offices, cafes, trips, and social gatherings, often customizing the robot's appearance and sharing photographs online. This behavior mirrors how people engage with collectible toys or fashion accessories, not traditional consumer electronics. What Does the Art and Fashion Strategy Look Like?

Leim introduced what it calls an "art-toy embodied AI" ecosystem with three core priorities. The company plans to work with intellectual property owners to bring characters into physical form, expand into settings such as exhibitions, fashion events, travel, and hospitality, and support continued user engagement through accessories, content, and user-created stories.

At the 2026 INCLUSION Conference on the Bund in Shanghai, Leim demonstrated this approach through live performances and interactive installations. Fingerstyle guitarist Zhou Jing performed alongside more than a dozen bibo robots that responded with shifts in gaze, head movements, sounds, and rhythmic motion. Because the robots generated responses through perception systems rather than following fixed routines, individual robots responded differently to the same music.

The company also created an exhibition featuring miniature environments representing spring, summer, autumn, and winter, with bibo robots styled differently in each setting and responding as visitors approached. An installation called "You Through bibo's Eyes" invited visitors to create personalized AI-generated portraits that combined captured images with felt-art-inspired visuals, using perceived emotional cues to influence the composition.

This appearance represents a symbolic moment: a physical AI robot stepping onto a high-fashion stage, not as a technological novelty, but as a character with a defined role and narrative.

The partnership also includes planned designer collaborations, clothing lines, accessories, and limited-edition products involving AI characters. By combining Leim's miniature robotics and sensing capabilities with Trends Media Group's expertise in photography, styling, storytelling, and visual expression, the companies are creating a template for how embodied AI might integrate into consumer culture beyond industrial or utilitarian applications.

Leim reported that bibo received recognition at CES 2026, suggesting the approach is gaining attention in the broader technology industry.
