The Series A funding round was led by Azora and co-led by Andreessen Horowitz and Altimeter Capital, with NVIDIA and Michael Dell's family office participating. The $300 million valuation places Volta at $2.4 billion, making it one of the fastest-growing infrastructure plays in the AI ecosystem.

The Norway Deal: What Are the Financial Terms?

Volta's first major customer is an unnamed "leading AI lab," which Bloomberg has reported to be Anthropic, though neither company has confirmed this publicly. The company has committed to a $10 billion strategic partnership with this lab, with the first phase deployed at Bitdeer's Tydal campus in Norway.

The lease agreement is structured as a 16-year contract with an eight-year renewal option. Here are the key financial and operational details:

  • Capacity: Volta will lease 121 megawatts (MW) of IT capacity, supported by approximately 133 MW of gross capacity, at Bitdeer's Tydal facility in Norway
  • Contract Value: The base 16-year term represents approximately $4.7 billion in contracted payments, with the renewal option potentially bringing the total to $8 billion over 24 years
  • Pricing: The average rate is approximately $202 per kilowatt per month, with a 3 percent annual escalator that compounds over the contract term
  • Credit Support: Volta's obligations are backed by approximately $1.3 billion in letters of credit from J.P. Morgan and another top-tier global financial institution

Bitdeer, the landlord in this arrangement, retains 100 percent ownership of the campus and does not carry chip obsolescence risk or the burden of finding AI customers. The company also plans to raise additional debt against the Tydal facility and expects the project financing to generate significant excess capital for other AI and high-performance computing (HPC) projects.

How Does This Deal Compare to Other AI Infrastructure Conversions?

Volta's $202 per kilowatt per month rate sits at the top of the disclosed range for mining-to-AI conversions. For context, TeraWulf's arrangement with Anthropic at Hawesville prices at approximately $197 per kilowatt per month, while Hut 8's Texas facility comes in at roughly $155 per kilowatt per month. Cipher's deal with AWS at Black Pearl is estimated at approximately $142 per kilowatt per month.

The premium reflects Tydal's location advantages. Norway offers dual grid connectivity, access to local hydropower, an estimated power usage effectiveness (PUE) of approximately 1.1, and a carbon profile that matters to European customers and AI labs facing scrutiny on emissions. European colocation commands a structural premium over facilities in the US Permian Basin.

Why Is This Deal Significant for a16z's AI Strategy?

This investment represents a notable shift in how a16z is deploying capital in the AI ecosystem. Rather than backing only software companies or model developers, the firm is now investing in the physical infrastructure layer that enables AI at scale. Volta's emergence signals that a16z believes compute infrastructure is becoming a critical bottleneck for frontier AI development.

The Volta deal also highlights how traditional venture capital is intersecting with infrastructure finance. Morgan Stanley, Barclays, and Northland advised on the transaction, and leading financial institutions have been engaged for project financing. This suggests that AI infrastructure is becoming mainstream enough to attract institutional debt capital, not just venture equity.

Looking ahead, Bitdeer retains 47 MW of additional Tydal capacity targeted for the second half of 2027, outside this lease agreement. The company now has a marquee proof point and a live NVIDIA-spec campus with which to market additional capacity to other AI labs and HPC customers. Across all its facilities, Bitdeer claims to have 3 GW of capacity in operation and development across the US, Norway, Bhutan, and Canada.
