When Does AI Help Students Learn, and When Does It Backfire?

General-purpose AI chatbots like ChatGPT, when used for studying, can actually decrease student performance on exams. Fesler noted a troubling pattern: "Students often do better on tasks when they have access to those AI chatbots but then have trouble retaining that knowledge when those chatbots are taken away". The problem is cognitive offloading. When students rely on AI to do the thinking for them, they do not build the mental connections needed to remember information later.

Education-specific AI tools, by contrast, have shown more encouraging results. Tutoring-focused AI assistants do not produce the same performance decline as general chatbots. Additionally, AI tools designed to provide individualized feedback on writing assignments have been shown to improve the quality of students' future essays.

The key distinction is engagement. Fesler emphasized what schools should prioritize: "I think the main thing for schools to be thinking about with student use is really how students are engaging with the tools and whether it's encouraging students to be engaging more thoughtfully and deeply, and whether it's giving more actionable feedback for students".

How Are Teachers Using AI, and Does It Actually Help?

Teachers are increasingly turning to AI for lesson planning and administrative tasks. Some research suggests these applications can save significant time. Teachers can upload instructional materials and ask AI tools to adapt lessons for their specific classrooms, which can streamline preparation work.

However, the effectiveness of AI-generated lesson plans varies considerably based on subject matter, student needs, and how the teacher implements the material. More concerning, some research has found that teacher use of AI can actually decrease student motivation in the classroom, though Fesler cautioned that this finding comes from limited studies.

At Texas A&M University, researchers in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Culture are taking a different approach. Rather than simply adopting AI tools, they are studying how to integrate AI meaningfully into education. Dr. Tugce Aldemir has launched a federally funded project examining how AI can support STEM learning in rural middle schools, where students explore agricultural challenges, analyze data, and develop evidence-based solutions while building computational thinking skills.

What Specific AI Applications Are Schools Actually Deploying?

Schools across the D.C. region are experimenting with AI in different ways. In Prince George's County, Maryland, AI is being used to help students improve their storytelling skills. In Virginia's Fairfax and Prince William counties, the technology is helping teachers with lesson planning and other classroom duties.

Beyond these regional examples, schools are considering a range of AI-powered tools for different purposes. The most effective back-to-school strategy, according to education technology experts, is to match each tool to a defined problem rather than adopting every available platform. This means schools should ask: Does this tool solve a specific problem? Will it fit into existing workflows? Does it protect teacher time and student trust?

The rapid growth in AI programs and tools creates real challenges for school systems trying to determine which investments are worthwhile. Districts are spending significant resources on tools that lack rigorous evidence of effectiveness. This is not necessarily a reason to avoid AI entirely, but it is a reason to be intentional about implementation.

Fesler stressed that more research is needed: "Again, this is conducted on very few studies, and we're still learning about this. But I think there is kind of consistent findings that AI tools can save teachers a lot of time and can provide teachers with useful information about students in their classrooms".

Early research suggests the biggest lesson may not be whether AI is used, but how it is used. As schools prepare for the 2026-2027 school year, the message from researchers is clear: move thoughtfully, measure outcomes, and remember that AI is a tool to support teaching and learning, not a replacement for either.
