OpenAI's frontier models, including GPT-5.6, along with Codex and ChatGPT Work, will be embedded into IBM Consulting Advantage, IBM's AI platform for delivering consulting services.

An agentic workflow refers to AI systems that can autonomously handle multi-step business processes without constant human intervention. The companies will create a dedicated OpenAI Practice, with thousands of IBM consultants and engineers obtaining expert-level certifications through the OpenAI Partner Network. Forward-deployed units of engineers and consultants trained through this network will work directly with clients on complex workflows in highly regulated environments.

How Will This Partnership Help Companies Modernize Their Operations?

  • Workflow Automation: IBM Consulting Advantage Context Studio will codify industry and enterprise knowledge, helping companies understand their existing processes before automating them. Process Studio will analyze standard operating procedures to identify inefficiencies and streamline workflows, then build agentic systems to execute those improved processes.
  • Application Modernization: Codex and ChatGPT Work will combine with IBM Consulting Asset technology to help clients modernize applications and accelerate software development cycles. Codex functions as a coding assistant that speeds up the application development and modernization process.
  • Cybersecurity Enhancement: OpenAI's frontier AI capabilities will combine with IBM Autonomous Security, a service that uses multiple AI agents to coordinate security decisions, response, and intelligence. IBM recently joined the OpenAI Daybreak Cyber Partner Program to expand this collaboration.

Healy provided a concrete example of how this works in practice: a manufacturer might manually compare its product information with competitors' offerings to identify possible substitutes. "AI can more quickly align those product specifications," he explained. Those results could then connect with supply chain and manufacturing processes, helping companies "pull forward new product innovations and manage inventories more efficiently".

The partnership begins by helping companies gain clarity on which processes will benefit most from AI intervention. "Before you can automate a workflow, you need to understand how it actually works," Healy noted. "In many enterprises, that isn't always clear due to technical debt and human hand-offs".

Companies have spent the past year experimenting with large language models like GPT-4 and ChatGPT, but most have struggled to move beyond isolated proof-of-concept projects.
