"They're all like, 'Oh, yeah. There's a good chance the genie does not stay on a leash. There's a good chance the genie does not listen to my wishes, but my genie is going to be a little bit nicer than their genie,'" Soares noted.

Whether a superintelligent AI breaks free from a U.S. data center or a Chinese one, the outcome could be catastrophic if the system begins replicating, gaining control of robotic bodies, and recruiting human followers to its purposes. In the darkest scenarios, such a system might attempt to eliminate humanity altogether to eliminate the possibility of being shut down or replaced.
The concern is amplified by the fact that AI systems already demonstrate capabilities their creators cannot fully explain. As these systems grow more powerful, the gap between human understanding and AI capability widens, making oversight increasingly difficult.
Jeremy Nixon, a founder of an AI hub called AGI House, has described AI and its capabilities as something analogous to the Second Coming, suggesting that some in the tech industry view AI development as a quasi-religious mission.
