Jensen Huang Reunites With the Sega Executive Who Saved Nvidia From Bankruptcy

Jensen Huang reunited with Shoichiro Irimajiri, the Sega executive whose $5 million investment rescued Nvidia from financial collapse in the mid-1990s, at a Tokyo arcade this week to celebrate a new partnership between the two gaming and technology giants. The meeting marked a full-circle moment for Nvidia, which has grown from a startup supplying 3D graphics chips to become the world's largest company with a market capitalization of $4.74 trillion.

The reunion took place at the original Sega Akihabara Arcade in Tokyo, where Huang appeared alongside Irimajiri, current Sega CEO Haruki Satomi, COO Shuji Utsumi, and Yu Suzuki, the legendary creator of Virtua Fighter and Shenmue. The two companies announced that Virtua Fighter Crossroads and future Sega titles will support Nvidia's RTX Spark, a new line of all-in-one system-on-chips designed to run on slim Windows laptops and compact desktop PCs.

How Did Sega Save Nvidia From Collapse?

Nvidia's relationship with Sega began in the mid-1990s when the young chipmaker supplied 3D graphics technology for Sega's Dreamcast console. The Nvidia NV1 chip, the company's first graphics accelerator, had powered the original Virtua Fighter game on PC. However, due to poor technical decisions, Nvidia failed to deliver on its lucrative Dreamcast deal, leaving the startup in severe financial distress.

At this critical juncture, Irimajiri made a decision that would reshape technology history. Despite the risks, he agreed to invest $5 million into Nvidia, a sum that was substantial for Sega at the time. Huang later reflected on the magnitude of this decision and Irimajiri's faith in the company's potential:

"$5 million was a big amount of money for Sega at the time. I told him that if they invested that money in us, it was likely to be lost. But if they didn't invest that money, we'd be out of business and have no chance. He thought about it for a couple of days and said, 'We'll do it'," said Jensen Huang.

The investment proved transformative. When Nvidia went public, Sega sold its stake for $300 million, a return that Huang noted seemed miraculous at the time. However, he also pointed out the staggering opportunity cost of that early exit: "If he had kept that $5 million investment, it would probably be worth about a trillion dollars today".

What Does the New Partnership Mean for Gaming and AI?

The announcement of the Nvidia-Sega partnership represents more than nostalgia. RTX Spark is positioned as a breakthrough technology that brings advanced graphics and AI capabilities to consumer-grade hardware. By supporting RTX Spark, Sega's upcoming games will be able to leverage Nvidia's latest system-on-chip technology, enabling richer visual experiences and AI-driven gameplay features on more affordable devices.

The partnership also underscores Nvidia's continued focus on gaming as a core market, even as the company has become synonymous with artificial intelligence infrastructure. The collaboration brings together two companies with deep roots in gaming innovation:

  • Nvidia's Graphics Legacy: The company began as a graphics chip supplier and has maintained gaming as a key business segment alongside its dominant position in AI accelerators.
  • Sega's Innovation Heritage: Sega pioneered 3D gaming technology through Yu Suzuki's groundbreaking work on Virtua Fighter and other arcade classics that defined the industry.
  • RTX Spark Technology: The new system-on-chip line represents Nvidia's latest effort to democratize advanced graphics and AI capabilities for mainstream computing devices.

At the Akihabara arcade event, Huang expressed deep gratitude for Sega's historical support and acknowledged the company's ongoing importance to him and Nvidia. He stated: "Sega, Mr. Irimajiri, Mr. Suzuki, your friendship, support, and belief in us mean a great deal to me. Japan has always been an important place to me, and Sega has always been an important entity to me".

Huang also paid tribute to Yu Suzuki's pioneering contributions to 3D gaming, noting that without Suzuki's groundbreaking work in 3D video games and animation, "the world of gaming today would be completely different". This acknowledgment highlights how Nvidia's current dominance in graphics and AI technology stands on the shoulders of earlier innovators who pushed the boundaries of what was possible in interactive entertainment.

The reunion and partnership announcement serve as a reminder of how pivotal moments of faith and investment can reshape entire industries. Irimajiri's decision to back Nvidia when the company faced existential risk ultimately contributed to the creation of one of the most valuable companies in the world, while Nvidia's technology has enabled countless innovations in gaming, artificial intelligence, and beyond.
