Joby Aviation has announced a strategic partnership with Atoms, the infrastructure company founded by former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick, to acquire and develop vertiport sites across the United States. The collaboration marks a significant shift in the eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) industry, moving focus from aircraft certification to the ground infrastructure that will make air taxis actually operational in cities.

The partnership targets four key markets: Florida, New York, Texas, and California. These locations align with where Joby is preparing to launch early operations under the White House-backed eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP), a federal initiative designed to gather operational data before routine commercial service begins.

Why Ground Infrastructure Has Become the Real Bottleneck?

For years, the eVTOL industry has focused almost exclusively on aircraft development and FAA certification. Joby has made substantial progress on that front: the company has flown its first FAA-conforming aircraft, entered the final stage of type certification, and demonstrated operational capability through piloted flights across the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City. But as the company approaches commercial readiness, a new constraint has emerged. Aircraft need somewhere to land, charge, and connect passengers to ground transportation. Vertiports will function as multimodal transportation hubs where electric aircraft, autonomous ground vehicles, and ridesharing services converge. The most demanding component, though invisible to passengers, is on-site power infrastructure. Charging an eVTOL fleet at commercial frequency requires grid capacity of a scale that independently constrains site selection. This is why these facilities are described as power-intensive deployments.

Atoms brings specialized expertise in building complex, power-intensive infrastructure for smart cities. The company operates through multiple divisions including CloudKitchens, Otter, Picnic, and others, giving it experience in deploying technology-driven real estate at scale. This sequence indicates parallel development of manufacturing capacity, commercial distribution, and ground infrastructure all advancing toward the same goal: commercial air taxi service.
