Las Vegas's Data Center Boom Comes With a Hidden Cost: Water and Noise

Nevada's data center footprint is expanding rapidly, with 76 facilities already operating across the state and thousands more planned nationally, raising urgent questions about water consumption, power demand, and quality of life for nearby residents. As artificial intelligence (AI) workloads drive demand for graphics processing units (GPUs), these energy-intensive facilities are spreading faster than many communities can prepare for the consequences.

What Exactly Are GPU Data Centers and Why Do They Use So Much Power?

Before AI became mainstream, data centers primarily served as digital storage warehouses, holding healthcare records, banking information, and other sensitive data safely. But GPU data centers operate differently. Instead of just storing information, they use specialized graphics processing units to handle massive computational workloads at high speeds, processing the requests that power search engines, mobile apps, and AI assistants.

The computational intensity of these facilities creates a fundamental problem: heat. "[Servers] generate a lot of heat," explained Robert Rippee, former executive director of UNLV's Black Fire Innovation Hub. "You have to keep them cool to keep them functioning optimally." This cooling requirement drives enormous water consumption and electricity demand.

The scale is staggering. Data centers worldwide consumed nearly 448 terawatt-hours of electricity in 2025, according to a United Nations University report. To put that in perspective, if data center electricity use were a country, it would rank eleventh globally by consumption. By 2030, that figure could climb to 945 terawatt-hours, making data centers the world's sixth largest electricity consumer.

How Much Water Do Data Centers Actually Need?

Water consumption presents an equally pressing challenge. Data centers used 4.5 trillion liters of water worldwide in 2025, according to the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health. In water-scarce regions like Southern Nevada, this demand creates real tension with local communities and existing water users.

Cooling systems vary in their water efficiency. Some facilities use "direct-to-chip" cooling, running coolant straight to hot semiconductors. Others immerse entire servers in tanks of coolant, a more complicated and expensive approach. Southern Nevada has banned evaporative cooling, the most water-intensive method, pushing facilities toward "closed-loop" systems that recycle the same water indefinitely.

"The water footprint associated with the closed loop cooling depends on the technology that the facility is using, how large the facility is and other factors. Even with closed-loop systems, the environmental impact remains significant. Boulder City is currently in a dispute with the Bureau of Land Management over land that was rezoned from a solar energy facility to data center use, illustrating how quickly these projects can reshape local planning priorities.

What Are the Hidden Health and Environmental Impacts?

Beyond water and electricity, data centers create environmental and health challenges that often go unnoticed until residents start complaining. The constant hum of servers, fans, and cooling equipment generates both high and low-frequency sounds that, while not ear-splittingly loud, can accumulate into serious health problems over time.

Earlier this year, the Environmental and Energy Study Institute reported that people living near a Texas data center suffered migraines, nausea, high blood pressure, insomnia, and vertigo, all linked to the constant low-frequency noise. Diesel-powered backup generators at some facilities can reach 105 decibels, equivalent to a jackhammer, creating additional noise pollution during outages or peak demand periods.

Nevada currently operates 76 data centers across the state, distributed as follows:

  • Las Vegas: 36 facilities, making it the state's primary data center hub
  • Reno: 25 facilities, serving as a secondary regional cluster
  • Yerington: 14 facilities, representing rural expansion of the industry
  • Elko: 1 facility, indicating early-stage development in northern Nevada

Nationally, the growth is even more dramatic. Pew Research counted 3,000 data centers operating across the United States in 2026, with another 1,500 on the way. This expansion is happening despite the fact that data centers employ relatively few people per site, often fewer than 200 workers, leading the Wall Street Journal to call the industry "a job-creation bust".

How Can Communities Prepare for Data Center Expansion?

Given the rapid pace of data center development, communities need proactive strategies to manage growth and protect local resources. Experts recommend several approaches:

  • Regulatory Oversight: Establish clear zoning policies and environmental impact assessments before approving new facilities, rather than reacting after construction begins
  • Water Management Planning: Require closed-loop cooling systems and set strict limits on water consumption, particularly in water-scarce regions like Southern Nevada
  • Community Engagement: Reach out to elected officials at every level of government to voice concerns about noise, water use, and environmental impacts before projects are approved
  • Noise Mitigation Standards: Mandate sound barriers, equipment upgrades, and operational limits to protect residents from low-frequency noise pollution

"We see a whole lot of gusto from Gov. Joe Lombardo and some other folks to build data centers as quickly as we possibly can, without much thought for what the impacts look like. But there is appetite from our elected officials to address these issues. Switch, one of Nevada's largest data center operators, recently received Clark County approval for a nine-acre expansion to its southwest Valley campus, demonstrating how quickly projects can move through the approval process. This expansion underscores the urgency of establishing clear environmental and community protection standards before more facilities are built.

The AI boom is undeniably creating demand for computational power that data centers must supply. But as communities like Las Vegas discover, the infrastructure supporting artificial intelligence comes with real costs that extend far beyond electricity bills. Without thoughtful planning and community input, the race to build data centers could leave residents bearing the environmental and health consequences of an industry that generates relatively few local jobs.
