Malaysia's New Green AI Data Center Aims for 100% Renewable Power
Malaysia is about to host one of Southeast Asia's most ambitious green AI infrastructure projects. Key ASIC Berhad, a Malaysian semiconductor specialist, and CT Vision (International) Holdings Limited, a Hong Kong-based green technology investor, have signed a strategic partnership to develop a large-scale AI data center complex designed to run entirely on renewable energy.
What Makes This Data Center Different From Others?
Unlike typical data centers that draw power from regional grids, this facility will generate its own electricity through dedicated renewable sources. The partnership plans to build on-site and associated solar, wind, and complementary clean energy systems specifically to power the AI data center campus. This integrated approach means the facility won't depend on external power suppliers or worry about grid carbon intensity.
The project targets a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) ratio of 1.20 or better, a metric that measures how efficiently a data center uses energy. A PUE of 1.20 means that for every unit of power delivered to computing equipment, only 0.20 units are lost to cooling, power conversion, and other overhead. This significantly exceeds global and regional sustainability benchmarks and reflects cutting-edge efficiency engineering.
How Large Will the Facility Be?
The data center is planned to reach approximately 300 megawatts of IT load within five years from commercial launch, making it a substantial computing resource for artificial intelligence, machine learning, supercomputing, and enterprise cloud services. To put that in perspective, 300 megawatts is enough power to serve a mid-sized city's computing needs.
The partnership aims for 100% renewable energy penetration, with at least 50% of power generated on-site or through associated renewable assets. The remaining power would come from additional green sources, ensuring zero reliance on fossil fuels.

What's the Timeline for This Project?
The signed Memorandum of Understanding establishes an exclusive cooperation framework with immediate legal effect for confidentiality, intellectual property principles, and dispute resolution. Both parties will advance feasibility studies, site planning, detailed engineering, and commercial structuring, with comprehensive definitive agreements targeted for execution by the end of the fourth quarter of 2026.
