MediaTek's New Flagship Chip Brings AI Processing Power Directly to Your Phone

MediaTek has unveiled the Dimensity 9600 Pro, a flagship smartphone chip that brings advanced artificial intelligence capabilities directly to your device while dramatically improving battery efficiency. Built on a cutting-edge 2-nanometer manufacturing process, the new processor features a dual neural processing unit (NPU) architecture designed to handle complex AI workloads locally, meaning your phone can analyze information and provide intelligent assistance without constantly uploading data to cloud servers.

What Makes This Chip Different From Previous Generations?

The Dimensity 9600 Pro represents a significant leap in smartphone processing power. The chip uses a 2+3+3 All Big Core CPU configuration, which means it has eight processor cores optimized for different types of work. Two of these cores, called C2-Ultra cores, run at speeds up to 4.55 gigahertz for demanding tasks, while the remaining six cores handle lighter workloads at lower speeds. This design delivers up to 17 percent higher single-core performance and 15 percent higher multi-core performance compared to the previous generation.

Perhaps most impressively, MediaTek claims the chip reduces multi-core power consumption by 61 percent, a dramatic improvement that could translate into noticeably longer battery life during gaming, video editing, and other intensive tasks. Think of it like replacing an old engine with one that produces more power while consuming significantly less fuel.

How Does On-Device AI Actually Work on This Chip?

The real innovation lies in the Dimensity 9600 Pro's dual-NPU architecture and Agentic AI Engine. A neural processing unit is specialized hardware designed specifically to run artificial intelligence models, separate from the general-purpose processor cores. This means AI tasks don't compete with everyday phone functions like opening apps or browsing the web.

The chip can support AI language models with up to 30 billion parameters running entirely on your device. To put that in perspective, these are sophisticated models capable of understanding context, answering questions, and performing complex reasoning tasks. MediaTek reports that the NPU 1090 delivers 51 percent higher performance when processing the initial part of an AI response and 55 percent higher token generation per watt, a measure of how efficiently the chip generates AI responses.

A second-generation power-efficient NPU reduces energy consumption by 40 percent for always-on AI features, which matters because an AI assistant running throughout the day isn't useful if it drains your battery by noon. This efficiency means your phone could potentially analyze your usage patterns, understand your preferences, and provide proactive suggestions without constantly reaching out to the cloud.

What Are the Practical Benefits for Everyday Users?

  • Faster App Performance: The 17 percent single-core improvement means opening apps, loading webpages, and navigating your phone's interface should feel noticeably snappier compared to previous-generation devices.
  • Better Battery Life During Demanding Tasks: The 61 percent reduction in multi-core power consumption translates to longer battery life during gaming, video editing, multitasking, and AI-powered features without requiring a larger battery.
  • Smarter, More Private AI Features: With on-device AI processing, your phone can provide personalized assistance based on your data without uploading sensitive information to cloud servers, improving both privacy and responsiveness.
  • Advanced Gaming Capabilities: The G2-Ultra NX GPU delivers up to 27 percent higher peak graphics performance with 24 percent lower power consumption at peak performance, enabling console-quality gaming at frame rates up to 185 frames per second.
  • Professional-Grade Camera Features: The Imagiq 1290 image signal processor combined with NPU capabilities enables 4K video recording at 240 frames per second for ultra-slow-motion capture, 4K60 AI True Color Tone, and 4K120 cinematic log recording.

How to Maximize AI Features on Your Next Smartphone

  • Enable Always-On AI Features: Look for settings that allow continuous AI assistance, such as smart analysis of your usage patterns or proactive suggestions. The improved power efficiency means these features won't drain your battery as quickly as before.
  • Use On-Device AI for Privacy-Sensitive Tasks: Take advantage of features that process your personal data locally rather than uploading to the cloud, such as photo analysis, voice transcription, or personal assistant functions that learn your preferences.
  • Leverage Advanced Camera Modes: Explore professional-grade imaging features like ultra-slow-motion video recording and AI-enhanced color correction that are now possible with the improved ISP and NPU integration.
  • Monitor Background App Performance: The upgraded Dimensity Scheduling Engine coordinates resources to keep multiple applications running smoothly in the background, so you can multitask without experiencing slowdowns.

It's important to note that chipset capabilities alone don't guarantee every feature will be available on every phone. Smartphone manufacturers must pair the processor with appropriate camera sensors, memory, cooling systems, and software optimization to deliver the full potential of the Dimensity 9600 Pro.

"AI is central to the smartphone experience, and devices need greater performance, efficiency, and intelligence to keep pace with rapidly evolving user demands. The Dimensity 9600 Pro meets these demands with a Native AI architecture and dual improvement in performance and power efficiency to deliver new agentic AI experiences," said JC Hsu, corporate senior vice president at MediaTek and general manager of the Wireless Communications Business Unit.

When Will Phones With This Chip Arrive?

MediaTek announced the Dimensity 9600 Pro on September 15, 2026, and stated that the first smartphones powered by this chip are expected to launch in the current quarter. The company is also introducing a companion chip called the Dimensity 9600M, which brings flagship-level performance and power efficiency to a broader range of devices while using the same Agentic AI Engine and advanced scheduling technology.

The Dimensity 9600 Pro represents a meaningful shift in how smartphones handle artificial intelligence. Rather than treating AI as a cloud-dependent feature, the chip enables devices to think more independently, process information faster, and do so while consuming less power. For users, that means smarter phones that respect privacy, respond instantly, and last longer on a single charge.
