Microsoft's AI Data Center in New Jersey Faces Major Backlash Over Unpermitted Turbines and Environmental Violations

A $19.4 billion Microsoft-backed data center project in Vineland, New Jersey, is facing intense community backlash over unpermitted gas turbines, an unlicensed liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tank, and environmental violations that could affect local water supplies and air quality. According to Stand.earth, an environmental advocacy group, the facility has been operating at least 62 gas turbines on site, with approximately 45 running at any given time, despite lacking proper permits. These turbines are located near two local schools and have generated significant air pollution concerns in the surrounding area.

Beyond the turbines, the data center also constructed an unpermitted 1.5-million-gallon LNG storage tank and has generated unacceptable noise levels at night that affected residents living within a half-mile radius of the facility. The situation mirrors what SpaceX's AI division did in Memphis, Tennessee, where it deployed 69 unpermitted natural gas turbines to power its data centers. SpaceX has since committed to removing those generators, but only over the course of a year as they are replaced by a 1.2-gigawatt on-site power plant.

A third-party engineering review revealed additional concerns about the data center's stormwater management system, which does not comply with state regulations. The experts warned that if these issues are not corrected, they could result in both on-site and off-site flooding, particularly given the facility's massive 55-acre footprint. The review also found that the data center has "underestimated the annual groundwater recharge by at least 20 million gallons per year," a miscalculation that could lower aquifer levels and reduce water availability or quality for nearby residents.

What makes the situation more contentious is that residents were kept largely in the dark about the project's true purpose. Construction began in 2025, but residents only learned that DataOne was a data center after Nebius, the operator, signed a multi-year agreement to deliver dedicated computing capacity to Microsoft in October 2025. The $19.4 billion deal to secure the GPUs became public knowledge, prompting residents to search government documents and ask questions of city officials.

It took until January 2026, several months after construction had already begun, for the city to hold a town hall meeting to discuss the project. DataOne CEO Charles-Antoine Beyney acknowledged that the meeting should have been initiated much earlier. By that time, residents had already been experiencing noise complaints for weeks, described as a low hum similar to that of a generator.
