Counterpoint Research projects agentic AI smartphone chip shipments will grow at a 281% compound annual growth rate between 2025 and 2027, with penetration expected to rise to 32% by 2027. This explosive growth will be driven by both premium devices priced above $600 and mid-tier phones ranging from $250 to $600.

How Are Qualcomm and MediaTek Competing for Dominance?

The competition between chipmakers is intensifying. MediaTek became the first to commercialize agentic AI capabilities through its Dimensity 9400 series, beating Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 to market. This early advantage has given MediaTek momentum in premium smartphones, where it is aggressively expanding and pushing advanced AI features into broader price categories.

Qualcomm, historically dominant in premium Android devices, now faces significant competitive pressure. However, Qualcomm confirmed its partnership with Google on the upcoming Googlebook AI laptop lineup, signaling its commitment to the broader AI-first device ecosystem beyond just smartphones.

The three tech giants are taking distinctly different approaches to on-device AI, reflecting their different business models and ecosystems:

  • Apple's Strategy: Continues focusing on on-device AI processing through its custom silicon, Neural Engine, unified memory architecture, and tightly integrated ecosystem. Apple's eventual entry into dedicated agentic AI smartphones could significantly reshape the market.
  • Samsung's Strategy: Strengthening its position through investments in memory-focused AI technologies and partnerships with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Perplexity tied to the Galaxy S26 lineup.
  • Google's Strategy: Pursuing a hybrid edge-to-cloud AI strategy, combining local processing with cloud capabilities. Google is also developing Googlebook, an entirely new category of premium AI-first laptops that deeply integrate Gemini into the core experience.

Google's Googlebook partnership extends beyond smartphones. The company confirmed that upcoming notebooks will ship with processors from Intel, Qualcomm, and MediaTek, establishing strict hardware standards across memory, storage, keyboards, and overall build quality to ensure every device delivers a consistent premium experience.

MediaTek is currently holding an early advantage in the mid-tier transition through its agentic AI-ready Dimensity 8400, 8450, and 8500 chipsets. These chips bring advanced AI capabilities to phones priced between $250 and $600, where the majority of smartphone sales occur globally.

Counterpoint Research noted that OpenAI could potentially enter the smartphone market with AI-centric devices focused more on AI agents than traditional app-based experiences. However, supply-chain scale, memory availability, pricing, and user experience will ultimately determine commercial success.

The race to dominate on-device AI is reshaping the entire smartphone ecosystem. Qualcomm's partnerships with Google and other manufacturers, combined with MediaTek's early technical lead, suggest the next two years will be critical for determining which chipmakers control the future of AI-powered mobile devices.
