OpenAI Gives 100,000 Scientists Free Access to GPT-5.6 Sol Pro. Here's What They Can Actually Do With It.

Scientists at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study and France's École Normale Supérieure are already gaining access.

The free package is substantial. Each approved participant receives the equivalent of OpenAI's $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro subscription at no cost, including higher usage limits, expanded deep research capability, and larger context windows that allow the model to process roughly 100,000 words at once. Researchers also gain access to ChatGPT Work, an agentic mode that can plan and execute across multi-step projects, and Codex, OpenAI's coding environment designed for writing and debugging analysis code.

Who Can Apply and What Are the Requirements?

Eligibility is limited to research faculty and postdoctoral researchers at recognized, degree-granting institutions with high research activity. The application process requires verification of institutional affiliation through SheerID and submission of a paper posted within the past three years to scientific preprint servers in one of seven supported fields.

What Do the Performance Benchmarks Actually Show?

OpenAI highlights impressive benchmark results for GPT-5.6 Sol. The model scores 83% on FrontierMath Tier 4, a research-level mathematics benchmark, compared to 72.5% for its predecessor GPT-5.5, representing a 10.5-percentage-point improvement. On GeneBench Pro, which evaluates complex biological data analysis, GPT-5.6 Sol Pro solves 31.5% of tasks, more than double the performance on the original benchmark.

However, these numbers come with important caveats. Both benchmarks carry OpenAI affiliations. FrontierMath was developed with funding from OpenAI, which retains exclusive access to a subset of benchmark problems. GeneBench Pro is OpenAI's own benchmark, introduced in June 2026. Neither has been independently validated by a third party. A 31.5% pass rate on GeneBench Pro also means the model still fails on roughly seven in ten complex biological research tasks.

This limitation aligns with OpenAI's own acknowledgment of AI's current constraints. Real-world research projects demonstrate practical impact. Physicist Rogerio Jorge and collaborators are using AI to develop open-source fusion research software now in use at industry laboratories and national labs designing fusion energy devices. In theoretical computer science, researchers Barna Saha, Yinzhan Xu, and Christopher Ye used GPT-5.5 Pro to develop a proof establishing new bounds on computational complexity problems in high-dimensional geometry, subsequently validating and refining the results themselves.

Mathematics offers perhaps the clearest indicator of changing research norms. The number of arXiv papers acknowledging ChatGPT's contribution grew from 14 in February 2026 to 100 in just the first three weeks of July, a nearly sevenfold increase in five months, according to OpenAI's internal analysis of the arXiv full-text index.

How Does This Fit Into OpenAI's Broader Research Strategy?

The ChatGPT for Academic Researchers program is part of a larger commitment. OpenAI describes it as part of a broader commitment of more than $250 million through 2027 to support external scientific research and discovery. This portfolio includes NextGenAI, a $50 million consortium launched in March 2025 with 15 founding research institutions including Harvard, MIT, Caltech, Oxford, and Howard University, providing research grants, compute funding, and API access. It also encompasses OpenAI's collaboration with the Department of Energy's Genesis Mission, which brings frontier AI to researchers at national laboratories and universities across the country.

Data privacy protections are business-grade. Data shared through the program is not used to train OpenAI's models, and workspaces carry privacy and security protections equivalent to commercial enterprise customers. This distinction matters for researchers concerned about proprietary findings or unpublished data.

The announcement arrives five weeks after Anthropic launched Claude Science for all paid subscribers, a competing offering that skips the credential verification OpenAI requires. OpenAI's approach prioritizes verified academic status, while Anthropic's broader accessibility may appeal to researchers without institutional affiliations.
