The teen version comes with stronger protections around several high-risk areas. OpenAI designed explicit safeguards against self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities, and sexually explicit or graphic content. Beyond content filtering, the platform includes features meant to prevent emotional dependency on the chatbot itself. "We expect the model to have a conversation more like a friend and less like a partner," explained Pragya Misra, OpenAI's Head of Strategy and Global Affairs for India, in describing how the under-18 experience differs from the standard ChatGPT.

Parents with linked accounts can manage selected settings, set Quiet Hours to limit usage during certain times, and receive safety notifications when the system flags distress signals or inappropriate conversations. Teens also receive more frequent reminders to take breaks during extended use.

How Does Study Mode Help Teens Learn Better?

Study Mode, which launched in August 2025 and is now built into ChatGPT for Teens, represents a shift away from what OpenAI calls "brain rot," the erosion of productive struggle that comes with genuine learning. Instead of simply providing answers to homework questions, the model adopts a Socratic teaching style, asking guiding questions that help students work through problems step by step.

The feature adapts to how individual students learn best, whether through reading, listening, or visual aids, and then tests what they've absorbed with quizzes and learning visualizations. Another feature, Responsible Homework Reminders, encourages students to solve problems collaboratively rather than relying entirely on the AI. Study Hours allows teens or parents to set periods when Study Mode is automatically enabled, ensuring the learning-focused experience activates during homework time.

How to Set Up Parental Controls and Oversight

  • Configure Study Mode: Parents can enable Study Mode during designated homework hours, ensuring the Socratic teaching approach is active when their teen needs it most.

How Does OpenAI Determine If a User Is a Teenager?

OpenAI doesn't rely on a single age-verification checkpoint. Instead, the company uses behavioral signals to infer whether a user is likely under 18. Timing of use offers one clue; usage around 3 or 4 p.m., when many Indian students are just out of school, suggests a teenage user. The phrasing of prompts and questions provides another signal. A third comes from images; teens frequently photograph handwritten notes, and handwriting patterns offer additional evidence of age.

When the model cannot confidently determine a user's age, OpenAI defaults to caution. "We'd much rather be safe than be sorry," Misra said. "By default, we actually put you into the much safer experience, which is the under-18 experience".

What About Privacy Concerns for Teenagers?

Parental oversight inevitably raises questions about privacy. When asked how OpenAI balances oversight with a teenager's right to privacy, Misra acknowledged the tension. Some parents asked whether OpenAI could let them view every message their teenager sends the chatbot. "That is the ideal world where we want to be able to do it, but that is not the way that we would expect young adults to grow up and also to interact," Misra explained.

Instead of blanket surveillance, OpenAI's approach flags genuine risk while encouraging "real-world conversations with parents, with adults, with friends, with teachers" about responsible use. The company publishes guidance through its OpenAI Academy, an online resource hub for students, teachers, and parents.

Why Is India the Focus for This Launch?

India represents OpenAI's second-largest market for ChatGPT users, and the company sees vast potential for AI-assisted learning in a country with large populations in underserved communities. "There is a large community and a large population in India where just some sort of learning is better than no teacher at all," Misra noted, pointing to students now reaching quality educational content through a phone rather than a classroom.

The launch also aligns with India's regulatory environment. Misra praised the Indian government's current approach of "principle-based, risk-based regulation," arguing that it protects room for innovation while still requiring companies to build safeguards for younger users. The government's recent push to bring AI literacy to 10 crore (100 million) students, announced by the Prime Minister on Independence Day, has also shifted institutional attitudes. Schools and teachers have moved from wanting to restrict AI outright to asking how to use it well.

OpenAI's broader strategy reflects a recognition that young people are already using AI tools, and the company's responsibility is to make those tools safer and more educational rather than trying to keep teenagers away from the technology entirely. The teen-specific product, combined with parental oversight and learning-focused features, represents an attempt to thread that needle in one of the world's largest and fastest-growing markets for AI adoption.
