Roland Corporation has released Melody Flip, an AI-assisted melody-generation tool designed to help music producers overcome creative blocks by suggesting musical ideas while keeping final artistic decisions in human hands. The software, created through a collaboration between Roland and Sony Computer Science Laboratories, launched on September 4, 2026, and is available now through Roland Cloud Manager for macOS and Windows.

How Does Melody Flip Actually Work in Your DAW?

Melody Flip operates within digital audio workstations (DAWs) and offers two distinct workflows for producers. Users can either import an existing audio file, such as a track, loop, beat, or song idea, or browse directly through the software's library of pre-built musical styles. When you import audio, Melody Flip analyzes the structure, tempo, beat positions, key, chord progression, genre, and mood to recommend matching musical directions.

The tool organizes its generated material around what Roland calls Palettes. Each Palette is a library of musical ideas comprising four connected parts: melody, chords, bass, and drums. The release version includes approximately 250 Palettes spanning a range of genres and musical styles. Once you select a Palette or import audio, Melody Flip generates melodic ideas and related musical phrases that you can audition, adjust, and refine before exporting.

The software exports generated melodies along with backing parts as audio files or MIDI files, which can be imported directly into major digital audio workstations for further editing, arrangement, and production. This workflow supports the process from initial sketches and demos through to fully developed productions.
