SpaceX Is About to Attempt Its Riskiest Starship Catch Yet. Here's Why It Matters.

SpaceX is preparing to attempt catching a Starship upper stage with its launch tower for the first time, a test flight tentatively scheduled for late August that could fundamentally change how the company operates its rockets. The catch would mark a major step toward making Starship fully reusable, which is central to SpaceX's long-term profitability and its ability to compete in the commercial space market.

What Makes This Starship Catch Different From Previous Attempts?

SpaceX has successfully caught the Super Heavy booster, the lower stage of the Starship rocket, with its launch tower before. But catching the upper stage, called the Ship, is far more challenging. The Ship returns from space at much higher speeds than the booster, making the catch riskier and more technically demanding. The confidence to attempt this catch comes from Flight 13, which launched on July 24 and ended with the Ship surviving reentry and splashing down softly in the Indian Ocean, demonstrating that the vehicle can handle the extreme conditions of returning from orbit.

The upcoming Flight 14 will serve double duty. Beyond attempting the tower catch, it will also deploy the first Starlink V3 satellites into an operational orbit. These larger satellites represent the next generation of SpaceX's internet constellation and are critical to expanding the network's capacity. However, the company still needs regulatory approval to proceed with the catch attempt, and both vehicles must complete preflight engine firings before launch.

Why Does Catching a Rocket Matter for Your Internet Bill?

The reason SpaceX is pushing so hard for tower catches comes down to money. Starship's entire business model depends on rapid reusability. When a booster or upper stage lands at the tower where it launched, it can be inspected, restacked, and reflown without the expensive process of recovering it from the ocean. This dramatically reduces the cost per flight and is essential for SpaceX to achieve the economics it needs to make Starship profitable.

Right now, Starlink is carrying SpaceX's financial performance. The connectivity business generated $4.3 billion in revenue last quarter, representing 66 percent year-over-year growth and marking the only SpaceX segment currently operating at a profit. The company's overall net loss narrowed to $541 million from $1.0 billion, even as total revenue nearly doubled to $7.8 billion. SpaceX closed the quarter with $100 billion in cash and a $47.5 billion backlog of orders, resources the company says are being directed toward Starship development, additional Starlink satellites, and its artificial intelligence platform.

How to Understand SpaceX's Path to Profitability

The stock market is clearly betting on this vision. SpaceX went public in June 2026, and the company is now valued near $1.9 trillion, with the reusability case carrying much of that valuation. A successful tower catch would be the first time the Ship itself returned to the tower, validating a key assumption underlying that valuation.

Of course, a tentative date is just that. The flight could slip into September, and regulatory review operates on its own timeline. Even if the catch fails, the test flight will still provide valuable data about how the Ship behaves during reentry and landing. Test flights are designed to find failures and inform future improvements. But if the catch succeeds, it would represent a watershed moment for SpaceX's long-term vision of making space travel as routine and affordable as air travel.
