Can We Actually Measure AI Productivity Gains?
One challenge remains unresolved: nobody can currently produce a defensible number for what AI productivity tools are actually worth. METR, an AI safety research organization, conducted a randomized controlled trial with experienced open-source developers and found they took 19 percent longer on real tasks when allowed to use AI tools, even though they estimated afterward that the tools had made them 20 percent faster.
METR abandoned that research design in February 2026 once control groups became impossible to recruit, because developers would no longer work without agents. The replacement study, analyzing transcripts from seven staff engineers, measured time savings ranging from 1.5 times to 13 times faster, though the author stated plainly that the true productivity multiplier is substantially lower than those estimates.
This measurement gap matters because founders pitching 10 times engineering leverage are making claims the field cannot yet verify or falsify. Yet the venture capital market is already repricing itself based on these unproven assumptions, with seed round dollars rising while deal counts fall.
