Tesla's Robotaxi Fleet Hits 1 Million Unsupervised Miles, But There's a Catch
Tesla announced that its Robotaxi fleet has crossed one million miles of fully unsupervised operation, marking a significant step toward autonomous ride-hailing at scale. The figure represents a dramatic acceleration from the 380,000 unsupervised miles Tesla disclosed in late July, meaning the company added roughly 620,000 miles in just six weeks.

Tesla's acceleration came after a strategic decision to remove in-vehicle safety monitors from most operations outside the San Francisco Bay Area, where California's permitting rules still require a human observer present. This operational shift allowed the company to expand unsupervised service across multiple states and cities simultaneously.

Tesla has described its unsupervised operations as having recorded zero notable incidents in the period leading up to the July update, but the company's smaller operational footprint means less real-world testing data overall.
The company has not released a city-by-city breakdown of the one million unsupervised miles, nor has it specified how many of the latest miles involved the new Cybercab versus the existing Model Y fleet. This lack of transparency makes it difficult to assess whether the new purpose-built vehicle is performing as reliably as the converted passenger vehicles.
What's Next for Tesla's Autonomous Service?
Tesla is preparing to expand Robotaxi operations into overnight hours, a move that would significantly increase vehicle utilization and test the limits of its camera-based autonomous driving system. Ashok Elluswamy stated that 24-hour Robotaxi service is close, replying on social media that the capability would arrive "next month or so" once "the next tech to merge on the v15 plan" is ready. Currently, Tesla's paid Robotaxi network runs from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. across its six operating cities.

The reference to Full Self-Driving v15 is significant because Tesla has described this software version as a step-change architecture with seven parallel improvement tracks and roughly ten times more parameters than earlier builds. Overnight service would test Tesla's camera-based end-to-end neural networks in lower-light conditions, where traditional sensors might have advantages. The company has already begun using public Superchargers at night and is building dedicated Robotaxi charging sites to support around-the-clock operations.
If the v15 software module arrives on the timeline Elluswamy sketched, 24-hour service could begin in October 2026 in at least some markets. This would represent a shift from a daytime-bounded pilot program to a service that can run whenever demand exists, including late-night hours that have remained out of reach until now. However, Elluswamy did not specify whether the change would apply first to purpose-built Cybercabs, the existing Model Y fleet, or both, nor did he provide a city-by-city rollout plan.
The success of Tesla's Robotaxi expansion will ultimately depend on further city approvals, regulatory support, and the real-world performance of the Cybercab in paid rides. Whether the rapid recent growth continues remains an open question, but the one-million-mile milestone underscores Tesla's determination to compete in the autonomous ride-hailing market despite Waymo's substantial head start.
