The U.S. military has launched a first-of-its-kind online marketplace for counter-drone technology, allowing defense contractors and startups to list products directly and government buyers to rapidly evaluate and purchase validated capabilities. Built in less than nine weeks by NYC-based software startup Kaizen under a $15 million prototype contract, the platform went live in early August 2026 and is already processing orders from major defense vendors.
How Is the Pentagon Speeding Up Defense Tech Acquisition?
The Joint Interagency Task Force 401 (JIATF-401), the military's counter-unmanned aircraft systems task force, unveiled the marketplace to streamline how the U.S. and allied nations discover, validate, and purchase counter-drone solutions. Rather than relying on traditional procurement cycles that can take years, the platform operates like a commercial marketplace where vendors can onboard quickly and government customers can browse, evaluate, and order in a matter of weeks.
Kaizen, which has raised $35 million in venture funding including a $25 million Series A round last October, built the marketplace using two core technologies. Taproot serves as a global library of compliance-engineered building blocks for forms, marketplaces, permits, applications, reporting, payments, and scheduling. Blacksmith is an agentic artificial intelligence (AI) system that rapidly configures those building blocks for new military mission sets.
Which Defense Contractors Are Already Using the Platform?
Major defense technology vendors including Anduril, SmartShooter, DroneShield, and AeroVironment have already published their products to the marketplace. Early feedback from these companies has been overwhelmingly positive, with vendors praising how simple the onboarding process is compared to traditional government procurement.
While the platform is still largely in testing mode to ensure orders are being processed and adjudicated correctly, a handful of drone orders have already been placed through the system. The early success suggests the marketplace model could become a template for how the Pentagon acquires other critical capabilities.
