The machine's lack of pain is treated as the whole moral answer, but it may be only part of the answer. More recently, a Knightscope K5 security robot in Hayward, California, was attacked while guarding a parking garage. The robot captured video of a young man running toward it before the machine was toppled. The piece is animated enough to make viewers uncomfortable.

The installation's power depends on a contradiction that everyone understands but feels anyway. The robot is not a dog. Its apparent rage is an artifact of motors, software, sensors, and staging. Yet the body still reads as animal. The leash still reads as captivity. The collapse still reads as defeat. The machine does not need to possess an inner life for the scene to activate the viewer's moral imagination.
