Travis Kalanick's physical AI startup Atoms has secured $1.7 billion in funding, with venture capital giant a16z leading the round and co-founder Ben Horowitz joining the company's board. Ben Horowitz, who joined Atoms' board as part of the funding round, outlined the strategic rationale behind a16z's investment. He noted that Atoms has been in development for eight years and represents an inevitable evolution in how AI and robotics will reshape the physical economy.

"Similarly, it is inevitable that within a generation, robots are going to do most of the menial work in the world of atoms: transforming atoms, moving atoms, and storing atoms are inevitably robot tasks," Horowitz stated. "And while our imagination may be captivated by humanoid robots, the specialized ones are far better suited to most of those jobs."

Horowitz emphasized that specialized robots, rather than humanoid designs, are better suited to industrial tasks. He also highlighted that Atoms' work grew directly from Kalanick's experience at CloudKitchens, where the team studied how people make, store, and move goods locally, beginning with food production.

Who Else Is Backing Atoms?

Beyond a16z, Atoms has assembled a diverse investor base reflecting confidence in the physical AI thesis. Equity partners include Bain Capital, Uber, Fifth Wall, Chemistry, A*, K5 Global, Abstract, SV Angel, and Alpha Square Group. The company also secured debt financing from major financial institutions including Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, JPMorgan, and Barclays.

Uber's participation as an equity partner is particularly notable, given Kalanick's history with the ride-sharing company. He founded Uber but was forced out as CEO in 2017 amid controversy and accusations. His return to the company as an investor signals a reconciliation of sorts and underscores Uber's interest in physical automation technologies.

"This lesson is going to be applied over and over again as AI and robotics get deployed into the physical world," Horowitz noted. "The future belongs to those products that become legitimate by bringing some hustle to industries that have waited for technology to happen to them."

The $1.7 billion funding round positions Atoms as one of the largest bets on physical AI infrastructure to date.
