UNESCO Launches Free Global Course on AI Ethics, Shifting From Principles to Practice

The Global MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, hosted on Coursera, marks a significant shift in how the international community approaches AI governance, moving beyond theoretical frameworks to actionable guidance for those building and deploying AI systems.

The course launch took place on July 20, 2026, at the Ethics by Design: Industry and Innovation Conference in Seoul, with participation from UNESCO Director-General Prof. Khaled El-Enany, South Korean Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Kyung Hoon Bae, and leaders from government, industry, and academia. The initiative represents a flagship model of public-private partnership, demonstrating how technology companies can collaborate to create global public goods that operationalize ethical AI.

What Problem Does This Course Solve?

The UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of AI, adopted unanimously by UNESCO's 193 Member States in 2021, established the first global normative instrument on AI ethics.
