Unitree Draws a Line: Why It Won't Become a Robot Integration Company
Unitree is stepping back from a role that many expected it to fill: the company will not become an engineering contractor responsible for turning its robots into working factory systems. Instead, the Chinese robotics maker plans to concentrate on developing the hardware and core components, leaving the messy work of integration, customization, and ongoing support to partners and third-party specialists. The decision signals a strategic boundary around the company's ambitions, but it also exposes a gap that could slow humanoid adoption in factories across Asia.
What Does Unitree Actually Want to Build?
Speaking at an industry seminar on September 15, Xie Yipeng, Unitree's head of industrial scenario solutions, outlined the company's approach to factory robotics. According to his remarks, Unitree will remain open to third-party tools, sensors, communications systems, and additional power solutions, but the company itself will not undertake project delivery or serve as an engineering contractor. The distinction matters because supplying a robot and delivering a working factory installation are fundamentally different businesses with different responsibilities.

For an industrial customer, the machine itself is only part of the purchase. Someone must connect it to the workflow, select its tools, establish safe operating procedures, and demonstrate that it can complete the job consistently. The commercial question is who owns that work and who supports the installation when conditions change. By declining to take on integration work, Unitree is essentially saying: we'll build the robot, but you'll need to find someone else to make it work in your factory.
Why Does This Matter for Factory Adoption?
The timing of Unitree's statement is significant. CEO Wang Xingxing recently acknowledged at the World Robot Conference that the company's humanoids could perform simple assembly tasks, but remained slower than people and required retraining for new tasks. Those limitations had held back large-scale factory rollout. In other words, Unitree's robots are not yet plug-and-play solutions. They require customization, training, and ongoing refinement to work reliably in specific environments.
By stepping away from integration work, Unitree is essentially passing that burden to customers and their chosen partners. The risk is that without clear responsibility for making the complete system reliable and economical, factories may hesitate to adopt humanoids at all. A robot that works in a lab or a promotional video is not the same as a robot that works eight hours a day, five days a week, in a noisy factory floor with changing conditions.
How Will Humanoid Robots Actually Get Into Factories?

- Application Partners: Third-party integrators and engineering firms will adapt Unitree's robots to specific factory tasks, selecting tools, sensors, and workflows tailored to each customer's needs.
- Data and Training: Xie also pointed to a data problem: information collected by factories over time does not necessarily have the formats and relationships needed to train artificial intelligence (AI) systems effectively, adding another layer of complexity to deployment.
Xie's remarks help explain where Unitree expects to focus its own efforts within the broader process of getting humanoids into factories. Rather than becoming a full-service integrator, the company is positioning itself as a platform provider. That approach has worked for other hardware makers, but it requires a mature ecosystem of partners and clear contractual boundaries around responsibility.
The challenge is that the humanoid robotics market is still early. Unlike the industrial automation sector, where established integrators have decades of experience, the humanoid space lacks a deep bench of specialists who know how to deploy these machines reliably. Unitree's decision to stay focused on hardware development is pragmatic, but it also means customers will need to navigate a fragmented landscape of vendors, integrators, and support providers.
For prospective customers, the next milestone is therefore more specific than another hardware launch: a complete application that meets their requirements for output, reliability, and cost, with clear responsibility for keeping it working. Xie's remarks help explain where Unitree expects to focus its own efforts within that process. The company is betting that by staying focused on the robot itself, it can improve faster and serve more markets. Whether that strategy accelerates or delays humanoid adoption in factories remains an open question.
