U.S. Air Force's Autonomous Fighter Drones Face Their First Real Combat Test This December

The U.S. Air Force is preparing to deploy its first fleet of autonomous fighter drones in a large-scale military exercise this December, a milestone that will test whether human pilots and military commanders can trust AI-controlled aircraft in real combat scenarios. The Emerald Flag exercise will mark the first time Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) participate in what the military calls a "large-force employment" scenario, where multiple aircraft coordinate together in a realistic operational environment.

What Are Collaborative Combat Aircraft and Why Do They Matter?

Collaborative Combat Aircraft are a new class of autonomous drones designed to work alongside manned fighter jets rather than replace them. The Air Force's initial operational fleet will consist of two models: the General Atomics FQ-42A Vengeance and the Anduril FQ-44 Fury. These drones are smaller, cheaper, and more focused in their mission than traditional aircraft, making them easier to maintain and deploy to remote locations with minimal infrastructure.

The Experimental Operations Unit (EOU) at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada has been testing these prototypes for months, conducting virtual simulations and limited real-world exercises. According to Lt. Col. Lyndon "OTTO" Bartlett, Director of Operations for the EOU, the upcoming Emerald Flag exercise represents a fundamental shift in how the military will operate aircraft in the future. "That'll be our first tip dip of the toe in an actual force integration," Bartlett said during a panel at the Air and Space Forces Association's 2026 conference.

Why Is Building Trust in Autonomous Weapons So Difficult?

One of the biggest challenges facing the Air Force is not technical but psychological: getting human operators and commanders to trust that autonomous systems will perform as expected when lives are on the line. Military officers, including experienced tactical jet pilots, consistently emphasize that trust in autonomous systems is foundational to their operational success. The December exercise will be the first opportunity to test this trust in a realistic scenario where multiple aircraft must coordinate under pressure.

The EOU has been using a rapid feedback loop between programmers and military operators to refine the autonomous software. In simulated environments, this process is nearly instantaneous. "When the mission autonomy iterations are happening, our guys are literally with the programmers," Bartlett explained. "They give the feedback, and if it's possible to do immediately, they take that feedback".

How to Prepare Military Operations for Autonomous Drones

The Air Force is taking a methodical approach to integrating autonomous aircraft into operations. The EOU has already conducted testing across multiple areas to ensure these systems can work in real-world conditions:

  • Maintenance and Logistics: Testing has revealed that CCAs require only a one-to-one ratio of maintenance personnel to aircraft, which is significantly lower than traditional fighter jets. The drones are "extremely easy to maintain," according to Bartlett, and personnel from various Air Force specialties can be trained to load weapons and generate sorties.
  • Distributed Deployment: The Air Force conducted Agile Combat Employment (ACE) exercises at Edwards Air Force Base in California in April and Creech Air Force Base in Nevada in July to test rapid deployment to remote locations with minimal support infrastructure.
  • Regulatory and Policy Challenges: The biggest hurdle is not technical but regulatory. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rules were written for manned aircraft and remotely-piloted drones, not fully autonomous systems that operate with minimal human engagement. The Air Force must work with the FAA to create new policies that enable autonomous operations while maintaining safety standards.

Bartlett acknowledged that the Air Force faces two critical challenges moving forward. The first is navigating FAA regulations for autonomous aircraft operating in U.S. airspace. "These things don't have pilots. They're not remotely-piloted aircraft. They're not manned fighters. They have no pilots," Bartlett stated. "Our system is not set up for that, and that is a challenge that we are finding extremely hard to navigate through".

The second challenge is developing new military doctrine that is tailored to autonomous systems rather than copying old regulations designed for manned aircraft. "We need to make sure the Air Force is ready for these things, to set policies that make sure the enterprise and the country is ready to receive these, and internalize an autonomous fighter that does not have a pilot that is running on a mission autonomy agent that doesn't listen to air traffic control," Bartlett added.

What Will the December Exercise Actually Test?

The Emerald Flag exercise, hosted by the Air Force's 96th Test Wing at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, has historically focused on demonstrating new aerial networking and command-and-control capabilities. The exercise series brings together multiple branches of the U.S. military to test how different systems work together in realistic scenarios. For the first time, CCAs will participate in what Bartlett called "an actual force integration," where autonomous drones will be integrated into a combined offensive counter-air operation alongside fourth- and fifth-generation fighter jets.

While the December exercise will be "small" in scale, Bartlett emphasized that these incremental tests are where the military builds the intangible qualities that matter most. "Those learnings are going to be just as valuable as the technical, like does the radio work properly? Does the button I push to say 'target' work properly?" he explained.

The success of autonomous systems depends not just on whether sensors function correctly or communications work reliably, but on whether human operators develop genuine confidence in the technology. That confidence can only come through repeated, successful demonstrations in increasingly realistic scenarios. The December exercise represents the first major test of whether the Air Force's autonomous drones can deliver on that promise.
