What Makes AI Music Feel Different to Listeners?

Landau's perspective on music itself has shifted after years of observing this trend. He spent decades learning to play music with technical skill, assuming that mastery of an instrument led to better music. But the current flood of technically proficient AI songs has forced him to reconsider what music actually is.

"The point of music is not to play music good. The point of music is to have a human expression and connect with other people through human communication. And that's the piece that AI can't do," explained Landau.

The experiment of removing human intention and lived experience from music creation has yielded a clear result: listeners feel the absence, even if they cannot articulate why. The technical competence that once required years of practice and emotional investment can now be generated in seconds, but something essential is lost in that translation.

How to Spot AI-Generated Music on Streaming Platforms

For those curious about identifying AI music in their playlists, several telltale signs exist. Some uploads are obvious, while others require closer inspection:

  • Artist Attribution: Many AI-generated tracks are labeled with composer names like "UDio" or "Suno," making them immediately identifiable as AI creations.
  • Prolific Unknown Artists: Brand new artist accounts that have released dozens of albums and thousands of songs in a short timeframe, with no online presence or verifiable history, are likely AI-generated.
  • Inconsistent Vocal Quality: Each song features a different singer with varying vocal ranges, tones, and qualities, suggesting no single human performer created the catalog.
  • Genre Whiplash: Consecutive songs jump between completely different styles, such as hard rock followed by country followed by electronic music, with no coherent artistic vision connecting them.
  • Production Anomalies: Tracks may sound like they were recorded by professional studio musicians but lack proper mastering, or contain abrupt starts and stops, or feature instrumental sections placed in ways no human musician would arrange them.

Landau noted that the scale of AI music generation has become almost incomprehensible. Prompt-based platforms allow users to generate thousands of songs instantly, faster than a person could listen to a single track. "It's like, I've seen 100,000 reggae songs, so I know what a sound file of a reggae song looks like and I can print something that looks very similar," Landau explained, describing the process as more akin to an industrial extruder than creative composition.

What frustrates Landau most is not that AI music exists, but what it represents as a missed opportunity. AI music generation could theoretically enable the creation of sounds that are physically impossible for human musicians to produce, or entirely new sonic territories that expand what music can be. Instead, the technology is being used to mass-produce conventional pop songs, reggae tracks, and other familiar genres at industrial scale.

The result is a strange paradox in the music streaming ecosystem: platforms are drowning in content, yet listeners are starving for meaningful connection. The technical barrier to music creation has been demolished, but the human element remains irreplaceable. As Landau and his colleagues continue to catalog the endless stream of AI uploads, one thing becomes clear: listeners know the difference between a song and a sound file, even if they cannot always explain why.
