  • Implement Continuous Monitoring Instead of Periodic Reviews: Static governance models that rely on annual audits or quarterly compliance checks cannot keep pace with rapidly evolving AI systems. Organizations need real-time risk detection and feedback loops that flag violations as they occur, allowing governance to respond in near real time without slowing innovation.
  • Automate Governance Rules Through Policy-as-Code: Converting security and compliance requirements into executable program code rather than leaving them as written documents allows organizations to ensure policies are automatically checked, enforced, and evaluated. This approach reduces reliance on manual reviews and improves accountability.
  • Map Governance Across the Entire AI Lifecycle: Governance cannot be treated as a compliance-only function. Organizations need frameworks that integrate oversight across all stages, from planning and design through deployment, monitoring, and eventual decommissioning.

The Great Falls College study analyzed over 200 individual security actions from two major frameworks: the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) AI Risk Management Framework and the international ISO/IEC 27001 information security standard. The researchers found that nearly 85% of the actions in the NIST framework can realistically be encoded as machine-executable controls.

This matters because it reveals where automation can genuinely reduce the burden on human teams. By automating the majority of routine governance checks, organizations can move from reactive, manual compliance cycles to continuous, machine-enforced security. It also creates a more transparent and auditable trail: automated rules can be traced, tested, and verified in ways traditional policy documents cannot.
