Archer Aviation's push to launch electric air taxis for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics faces a critical challenge that has nothing to do with aircraft design: the lack of charging infrastructure needed to support widespread operations. While the company nears Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification for its Midnight aircraft, industry experts and government agencies agree that vertiports, charging equipment, and electrical upgrades at airports represent the true barrier to making air taxis a viable transportation option in major cities.

Archer Aviation, designated as the official Olympic manufacturer of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for LA28, has made significant progress on the aircraft itself. The company has completed three of four required FAA certification phases for its Midnight air taxi, which is designed to carry four passengers and a pilot at approximately 150 miles per hour. Yet certification alone won't solve the infrastructure crisis.

The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) recently identified the core problem: airports face substantial challenges installing infrastructure for electric aircraft, including high costs, uncertainty about demand, and questions about reliable electricity availability. These aren't minor hurdles. They represent the difference between having a working aircraft and having nowhere to operate it.

In July 2026, Goldstein announced a consortium partnership with BETA Technologies and Macquarie Capital to address this exact problem. The group plans to electrify up to 250 air taxi sites across America's largest airports and metropolitan areas over the next decade, utilizing BETA's electric aviation chargers and an open charging standard endorsed by the General Aviation Manufacturers Association.

How Is Archer Building Its Infrastructure Foundation?

  • Hawthorne Airport Hub: Archer purchased the 80-acre Hawthorne Airport in southwestern Los Angeles County for $126 million in late 2025 to serve as its flagship air taxi hub, located just three miles from Los Angeles International Airport and three miles from SoFi Stadium, where Olympic events will take place.
  • Facility Upgrades: Plans include up to 200,000 square feet of hangar space, a new passenger reception center, and charging infrastructure designed to support multiple aircraft operations simultaneously.
  • Multi-City Expansion: Archer is participating in three of eight FAA pilot program proposals across Texas, Florida, and the New York and New Jersey Port Authority region, testing air taxi operations in diverse markets.
  • Charging Standardization: The consortium partnership will deploy standardized charging equipment across major metropolitan areas, ensuring compatibility and reducing operational complexity for future operators.

The Hawthorne facility represents more than just a landing site. Archer describes it as "the first airport of the future" and plans to use it as an innovation testbed for next-generation artificial intelligence-powered aviation technologies, including AI-powered air traffic and ground operations management.

Why Regional Coordination Matters More Than You'd Think

Lavera Alexander, chief growth officer of the Monterey Bay Economic Partnership, emphasizes that infrastructure challenges extend beyond individual airports. She leads the California Advanced Air Mobility Corridors Initiative (CAAMCI), which is developing the state's first FAA-compliant, multi-airport flight corridor in central California. Alexander believes a regional approach could unlock opportunities not only for air taxis but also for fire mitigation efforts and healthcare transport.

For eVTOLs to become economical at scale, public-use airports across entire regions need coordinated upgrades. This includes ground facilities, landing facilities, and electrical and energy systems capable of expanding to accommodate multiple aircraft. A single vertiport in isolation cannot justify the investment; a network of them can.

The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics deadline adds urgency to this infrastructure race. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced that the Games would be "car free," making air taxis a potential solution for moving people between Olympic venues in Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Orange County. Archer's Midnight aircraft, designed to turn an hour-long trip from LAX to downtown Los Angeles into a less than 10-minute commute, could theoretically help achieve that goal if the charging and operational infrastructure is ready.

The aircraft itself is engineered for safety and flexibility. Midnight was designed to certify both for vertical takeoff and landing and for conventional takeoffs and landings, allowing it to serve as both an air taxi in cities and as a conventional aircraft. This dual capability means pilots can use conventional runways when available, extending range and reducing charging time.

Archer has also secured an industry-first partnership to integrate SpaceX's Starlink low-Earth-orbit satellite internet into Midnight vehicles, enabling in-flight internet access for passengers and improved communications between pilots, other aircraft, and ground engineers.

The real test of whether air taxis become a mainstream transportation option won't come down to aircraft performance or certification timelines. It will depend on whether Archer, its consortium partners, and regional authorities can build out the unglamorous but essential charging and operational infrastructure needed to support hundreds of daily flights across America's major cities. Without that foundation, even the most advanced aircraft will remain grounded.
