The key to Chinese efficiency lies in optimizing a fundamental mechanism called "attention," which allows AI models to understand which parts of text matter most when processing information. U.S. labs initially solved this problem by throwing more computing power at it, but Chinese labs found a different path.

"Chinese labs found algorithms that reduce the complexity of those calculations by an order of magnitude, and then achieve better results because they're able to summarize the most relevant tokens," said Brendan Burke, semiconductors and supply chain analyst at Futurum Group.

This innovation wasn't accidental. When the U.S. restricted China's access to Nvidia's most advanced chips, Chinese labs were forced to work with domestic alternatives like Huawei's processors. That constraint became an advantage, pushing researchers to develop computationally efficient methods instead of relying on raw processing power.

What's the Real Cost Difference for Businesses?

The efficiency gap translates directly to enterprise spending. According to Ameya Kanitkar, cofounder of AI measurement platform Larridin, Chinese models like GLM 5.2 and Kimi 2.6 and 2.7 handle approximately 75% of engineering tasks "reasonably well" at just one-fifth the cost of leading U.S. models.

"Frontier U.S. models still have an advantage on the most complex tasks, but Chinese open-weight models are becoming more than capable enough for the majority of everyday enterprise engineering work," explained Ameya Kanitkar, cofounder of Larridin.

This cost advantage matters increasingly as AI spending grows. McKinsey research found that 20% of business leaders surveyed said AI-related costs, including token purchases, are constraining their use of the technology. For companies managing tight budgets, Chinese models offer a practical alternative.

How Are U.S. Companies Actually Using Chinese AI Models?

Beyond cost, Chinese models are gaining traction because they're available as open-source versions that companies can download and customize. DeepSeek-R1, for example, is available through platforms like Hugging Face, allowing businesses to run the model themselves or through U.S.-based cloud providers like Amazon Web Services without sending data to China.

Real-world adoption is accelerating across major companies:

  • DoorDash: CEO Andy Fang said using Moonshot AI's Kimi was "cheaper" and "better quality" without degrading code quality
  • Cursor: The AI coding startup used Kimi to help build its Composer 2 coding agent
  • Airbnb and Siemens: Both companies are experimenting with Alibaba and DeepSeek models, with Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky calling Qwen "fast and cheap"
  • Thomson Reuters: Built an in-house model by adapting Alibaba's open-source Qwen to handle document-review work previously done by Claude

Hugging Face data shows the shift is substantial: Chinese open-source models accounted for 41% of total downloads last year, a larger share than U.S. models. More directly, Ramp's AI index found that the share of businesses paying for platforms with access to open-source and Chinese-developed models rose to 6.1% of total AI-spending businesses in July, up from 4.5% in January.

However, experts caution that Chinese models haven't entirely replaced U.S. ones. Mike Finley, chief technology officer of enterprise AI analytics firm AnswerRocket, noted that U.S. frontier models still serve as the "existence proof" for innovation.

For businesses, that competition is creating real choices and driving down the cost of AI deployment.
